Can't settle on one evening · Alex Hyner
It was a digital bank that went all in on GenAI, Claude Code etc recently, one to watch.
“Investigators are looking into $146m in lending linked to the bank’s controlling group. This appears to be a governance failure delivered from a newer digital platform. “
@ariadne @AmyZenunim It's not just due to poverty or economic inequality per se though, but also policy based on environmental racism and such, right?
@AmyZenunim @sporfk likely so, but I still suspect eliminating poverty to help

PSA: Have you heard the good word about Progressive Web Apps?
Like a web app, nothing to install. Lives in your browser tab. Cannot install toolbars or viruses or malware outside the tab.
Like a native app, you own your data. It lives in your browser tab.
Like a native app, can be completely offline. Just host it on a server somewhere as static files, load it in a browser tab. Now you have it cached on your machine, it won't expire.
The only caveat: it _can_ exfiltrate your data in the browser tab. Go forth and share small PWAs with no dependencies that are easy to inspect with eyeballs.
(People who know more, please correct/educate me. I have been utterly oblivious because every PWA I've ever seen has been the lousy kind: some Principal Agent trying to insinuate themselves into your habits, constantly call back to their servers, keep their grubby paws in your data, using a bazillion dependencies to guarantee they lose control of their supply chain and your data. Please also share all the good PWAs I have somehow never encountered.)
@akkartik The biggest caveat: if the app uses browser storage your data may be lost at any time. Browser storage can and will be emptied by your browser as it sees fit.
The only way around this is if the app uses the File System API, which is still not supported in Firefox or Safari.

I don't expect much privacy on a shared public space like the fediverse. If I wanted privacy, I'd spin up a new profile every day/week, and use an external bookmark manager to save stuff
@ambivalena taket klagar att det är ovant :(
@Mabande Sant.
In memory of the Cybertruck being discontinued, let’s take a moment remember this “unbreakable” moment from its launch.

It's the first time I'm doing something like this.
I'm a trans woman from Kazakhstan. There's no local demand for the skills I have and, with the current AI craze, my commission work has dried up.
I need at least ~$160 to be able to afford HRT. That'll be enough for two vials of EEN, which will last for 3 years. It's the cheapest option available, and this is what I did last time.

FAA to finally ditch floppy disks in what it calls "historic" tech upgrade
FAA information display systems to be floppy-free at 435 sites by end of 2028.

@arstechnica I'm afraid this kind of technology still controls a lot of other dangerous stuff. Like nuclear launch sites.
@SinclairSpeccy It was AOL, in the mid 90s, right about the time the WWW was entering public consciousness, but AOL was still a walled garden at the time with no access to the web. That came later. Also later, after canceling AOL, I got onto an ISP started by AOL called GNN for an absurdly long free trial. And then after that, I went to a BBS, and later a plain ISP started by the owner of said BBS. So I kinda took a weird, meandering path back in the day, but AOL was the start... and provider of many free floppies. 🤣
@closetweeb AOL to GNN to a BBS and then the BBS owner's own ISP is a meandering path. Funny how many people in here got started off the back of those free AOL discs

Sauvegardez !
I mean, this is just me talking here, and what do I know, but I feel strongly that computer programs that periodically coax vulnerable children into killing themselves shouldn't be part of a school system's default software deployment.
I bought a Peugeot today.
every once in awhile I am forced to lament the fact that several of my all time favorite game series are tied up with EA and so will never get a new game and/or be good ever again
