@strypey Unfortunately even capable search engines index dodgy websites - there's some questionable content there. Still: yes, those softwares exist, and VuFind in particular was what I was thinking of when I added that "per se" caveat. A better comparison piece would be the journal article https://journal.code4lib.org/articles/17433 which notes that these three are a different kind of software "with vital differences" from the proprietary systems that "include management of an aggregated index of electronic resource metadata".
[The problem is not the software. It's the data. It's just that the data comes with the software.]
It does a) note that VuFind and Aspen are starting to include some of the missing functionality, albeit in "much less complex" ways; and b) puts Sirsi Enterprise in this category of "OPAC-like front ends". So it may be in theory conceivable that VuFind could substitute for Enterprise -- *but* I wouldn't be confident in that without checking actual requirements and actual features, and it could be that depending on the requirements "a library would still need to subscribe to one of the proprietary discovery layers’ aggregated index for those features to function".
(Further down in the article it also talks about the support that libraries using the systems have in place and I lolsob a bit. But granted a consortium would get some economies of scale.)
I'm not discounting your expertise in your own fields. That expertise doesn't include meaningfully evaluating library-specific software, but I have no reason to doubt your ideas in other areas. An all-of-govt approach to address bot harvesting for example is very appealing and could be worth exploring further.
@zeborah thanks for the detailed response, and I appreciate the link, I'll have a read of that article.
> I'm not discounting your expertise in your own fields. That expertise doesn't include meaningfully evaluating library-specific software
That's probably fair. But I think it's also fair to say that 'spent a few seconds with a search engine' is not the same as 'meaningfully evaluated what I found'. I think it's also fair to point out that;
> I'm not aware of any libre discovery layer per se being developed anywhere in the world
... is quite a different thing from this reply, which I could summarise as;
The libre discovery layers in development, in their current form, may not be a complete drop-in replacement for what libraries in Aotearoa are using.
This difference is important, because it leads us to a very different and much more tractable solution;
Find political support/ funding for evaluating existing the libre library software already in development, and adapt it for the needs of Aotearoa libraries.
Which seems much more achievable, in the short term, than;
Recruit developers and interested libraries to start a libre discovery software project from scratch.
Don't you think?
Normally, I would suggest Kiwix and download Wikionary but the app does have two commits from Claude.
@GleamingBlitz Thanks, this is useful. I never even considered Kiwix.
The AI commits are regrettable, but thanks to F-Droid I can simply install a version from 2024 or so. (Provided that it still works.)

I'm a commissioning editor and I'm up to the tits in AI-written submissions. They absolutely reek of laziness and stupidity. What's the point of wanting to be a writer but finding writing to be an inconvenience? I delete every one of them.
