Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Says She’s Considering Repealing Hate Speech Section from Human Rights Act | The Watchdog

As the case has shaped up so far, there are several legal issues in play.
- whether the Voting Rights Act can be enforced by a private party
- whether the Voting Rights Act applies to the federal executive branch
- whether Trump regime’s threatening letters to elec officials and workers telling them to segregate ballots based on a dodgy DHS list of “likely noncitizen voters” violates the Constitution’s Elections Clause 4/
The Trump regime has been taking the position that because the VRA does not expressly create a private right of action there is none, and so it is only enforceable by the US Attorney General. The regime argues that since the US AG is in the executive branch this would call for the executive to sue itself, which it cannot do, and so the VRA does not apply to the federal executive.
In short, this is an effort to make the case about the unitary executive. 5/
@alice Well, yes. I'm here, after all. But that doesn't mean the federated architecture is without disadvantages of its own.
@alice Please don't take my comment as some sort of advocacy for big centralized systems. But they DO have some advantages, which are important to understand if we want to build viable alternatives.
The Australian response, which is to ban young people from using social media for politics, is not going to stand. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/nov/02/global-youthquake-young-people-anger-protest-liberal-democracy

Here’s how piefed handles it using the browser.

One day, Trump will realize that US elections are run by States, and the Federal Government generally -- much less the Executive in particular -- has no say in them.

Today is not that day.

@mcc The article I read said that Mark Zuckerberg and meta were being split up into quarters and fed to sharks so.... the technology is not all bad. Except it is.

You’re not alone in this wish, though I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you. I sort of accepted it as just part of how a federated reddit-style forum would work, but if there’s a way to address it, that would be very cool.

Is there a way to not see duplicate of the same topic across different communities?
Hi everyone!
I’m really enjoying the Fediverse through Lemmy and Peertube.
One creator I enjoy and follow on the Fediverse is Gardiner Bryant as his content is really enjoyable.
Sadly he ´s the target of my post as he shares his content on many different communities that I follow.
Today I had 5 times the same topic on RetroDeck (great project too) on my feed on Lemmy (Voyager).
It is the same on PieFed (Interstellar).
This is really annoying and I haven’t found a way to not show these duplicates. Do you know about one or is it worked on?
Also when crossposting, it would be great if everything appeared under on post. Is it feasible?
Sorry if it’s easy and I just missed it. In a way I hope it is because it would mean that the Fediverse is festure rich😇
an AI generated MAP!?!?!?!? we have had fucking CARTOGRAPHY for THOUSANDS OF YEARS. we have fucking SATELLITES. we even have fucking crowdsourced trail maps. how in the ever loving fuck are we HERE in HISTORY where people are using AI GENERATED MAPS

There’s a few cross folk in here, whose comments (I can’t pretend don’t hurt a bit!) do disagree. I’ll just have to have a think how I share on here going forward. The last thing I want to do is annoy anyone, but it takes a user all of 2 seconds to click on my profile here and see I’m deeply invested in the fediverse and have been on Lemmy for years now.
I appreciate your comment, thank you for saying so!
Folks, please share the link for our Fediverse Multimedia Grants.
We have funding for creators to make podcasts, artist's portfolios, webcomics, music stores, video streams, or brand new kinds of channels here. And we pay developers to help them be successful.
Our deadline is Wed 4 Nov 2026. It only takes a few minutes to apply.

By my reckoning, the New York Times devoted more resources to investigating a legal (if modestly sleazy) move by some Alaska Democrats than the staggering suppression of Democratic voting by the Trump regime and Republicans everywhere.
The Times is the trade journal for the rich and powerful.
No matter the outcome of tomorrow's elections, Wednesday will likely be "the election was rigged by hackers!" day for many disgruntled supporters of losing candidates.
Remember, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Think before you boost, especially when the message tells you what you want to hear.
@mattblaze Bush v. Gore I think it was a stolen election.
I need a new job. Let me know if there’s an opening for a very thoughtful, playful person who despises AI, cares about web standards, actually loves CSS and UX, has a long history in animation, and can write web or game code that ships with remarkably-few bugs (because I’m persistent and attentive)
so i’ve been thinking a lot lately about something.
it was 17 years ago or so, at a family gathering. i was mentioning some goals or aspirations for life or the future. my dad didn’t give advice of like “let’s work together or make this plan work” or “let’s think about this carefully to see how hard it would be” or anything
it was simply
“that’ll never happen and you can’t do that” and then proceeded to comment on my weight. great parent.
i will note: this wasn’t like “i want in to an elite school” or “i want to be an astronaut” type goals
the goal? renting/owning commercial property in a region of the US with cheap commercial real-estate.
what a dick
@gewt I'm sorry your dad was a narcissist :(
Oof, I laughed a little too hard
@mattblaze this seems like a case where having fascist tech bros running the world is a disadvantage.
@alice Well, yes. I'm here, after all. But that doesn't mean the federated architecture is without disadvantages of its own.
