@Kyresti Thought you might find this cool: You can ignore the clickbait headline: https://www.404media.co/fireside-project-psychedelic-support-line-study/
I don't mind the Mastodon v5 UI, looks about the same as the v4 one to me. I have the same complaint about both, which is that infinite scroll isn't infinite for me. I only look at my feed around once a week these days, and usually (v4 and v5) I get to the "end" (no more posts will load) before I get to anything I've already read.
Is there an alternative client I should be using to get manual paging, or a URL hack for the official client eg to specify a starting date?
[Self-answer in reply]
Apparently the limited home timeline posts is server-side and longstanding https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/36168#issuecomment-6592673896 I've probably just noticed it more with less frequent social media checking.
I suppose the solution is to use a feed reader instead of Mastodon to subscribe and read.

the only way my hothead loudmouth personality has any positive effect in the world 😂
other peoples' code easily frustrates an inexperienced developer; they must be seasoned for professional use. a seasoned developer is one who has been repeatedly coated with a layer of stress which is oxidized by medium-high temperature burnout. the resultant coating allows the developer to be resistant to bullshit and helps prevent ragequit
@tonyangelo read the thread you responded to. Done playing word games with trolls.
Tomorrow I'll be volunteering as a poll worker for the US midterm elections.
I've gotta be there for 15+ hours. Can you make sure to take 15 minutes to vote?
@puzzled the world keeps sending supertankers and megacargo ships through tricky narrow passages for critical operations all around the world and periodically deal with the dire circumstamces BUT THIS TIME IT'LL BE DIFFERENT because we are SPECIAL
@SecularJeffrey Tunguska! (later, I guess)
Wiki says this is the first appearance of the oil.
Tomorrow is the mid-term elections here in the U.S.
I'm nearly sick with stress. Trump appears to be on the verge of a two-year lame duck presidency....spiked with non-stop investigations of him and everyone who works for him.
The stress is about his reaction - I am deeply worried he will simply declare the election invalid or declare martial law or both. The military has been stripped of leaders who are not 100% Trump.
I have read too much history.
@gedvondur Yep. He ain't gonna like it one bit. I wonder how dangerous his tantrum will be. 🤞

What a detestable scumbag. Perhaps it's time for an Anti-Bases Campaign annual pilgramage to Mahia? Like the one they do (did?) to Waihopai. The first step would be reaching out to the mana whenua of Mahia.

Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for alternatives on Reddit; maybe worth pointing to BookWyrm and NeoDB?
Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for... #fediverse #goodreads #bookwyrm #neodb #rssfeeds
Both fediverse softwares that support user reviews for books, both have RSS support natively (no Piefed/Misskey bridge needed), and some comments also seem discontent with Amazon's mismanagement overall.
The election that we have been waiting two years for is tomorrow.
This could be the most consequential midterms of our lifetimes and we can’t afford to take anything for granted. 🧵
@ai6yr oh wow - i guess the prize was pretty substantial if you were considering booking a flight?
@Viss $10,000
I’m specifically mentioning this because I feel like I haven't seen any real notifications about the COVID vaccine availability in the last couple of years and just decided to look it up myself so I just got the COVID/flu one-two punch.
The good news is that my hospital group usually gets the COVID vaccine later than most pharmacies, so if my place has it, most should!
@Alice did the same a few weeks ago. a little soreness at the injection site, otherwise no side effects.
@mattblaze @tonyangelo A Mister Chad, Hanging is on Line 1 for you.
@shermozle @tonyangelo Really? Those machines were HACKED? That’s huge news if true.
As I’ve mentioned here before, the grassroots progressive organization I founded, #LandofAction, has been doing election watching, a statutorily recognized and regulated activity here in #NewMexico. Https://landofaction.org 1/
This afternoon, I had an Election-Day Eve call with people from across the state who are coordinating teams of watchers in their areas. They’ve been working for over a month, organizing, scheduling, watching during early voting, and now preparing to visit the many election locations that get added for Election Day. 2/
@AbandonedAmerica so the wild thing - these are sent thru a system and there’s actually a person on the other side to answer any responses! (They’re not all this way but typically if it has a persons name like this one, that’s the case)
@onyxraven that would almost make me feel guilty if they weren't texting on behalf of Marc Molinaro
@Viss I was able to geolocate to within a quarter mile, HOWEVER, to claim the reward you had to go to the location, and i wasn't about to fly to Seattle to go hunting for this, as there were already locals in the area hunting... (ie their odds of reaching the site before I was on a plane were too high).

My prediction if the Anthropic IPO fails, if I had to guess:
The AI bubble will pop. LLMs and local models won’t go anywhere but OpenAI and Anthropic are done.
Tech will face the largest reckoning it has ever faced. Like cataclysmic. So much of the industry has gone all-in on it, that a failure for AI profits to materialise (which I think we all expect) will likely wipe out the sector. Don’t expect to get a job as a programmer anytime soon. There will be no “normal” to go back to. Tech as we know it, even open-source, will change for good, and I don’t mean that positively. An enormous part of the ecosystem is propped up by paid work which will vanish overnight.
I imagine Microsoft will be bailed out because they will basically have to be bailed out. Windows is too widely used to be allowed to fail. I don’t know if the other AI companies will be bailed out and I imagine it’s going to be a major fight.
The real economy beyond AI has not grown appreciably and has contracted in some sectors. Datacentre construction has been the main reason commercial property nor construction have already suffered. I doubt construction or equipment companies go under, but it’s likely to be bad. Construction and tech layoffs will obviously have huge effects on the economy.
Multiple investment firms, especially private equity (already enormous pressure from overleverage during the period from 2008–2022) will likely implode. A lot of businesses that you might not expect to be affected will likely close or be sold off. Expect a huge wave of selloffs and closures of hospitals, restaurant chains, veterinarians, retail, property, etc.
I don’t know what happens to hedge funds or pension investments. Likely they get bailed out. Otherwise it would be the most devastating wipeout of retirement funds ever seen.
Governments will likely mobilise tremendous sums to keep the economy alive. The effect may be blunted for some time. I expect the US national debt to go out of control which who knows what consequences that will have. Many states will likely have to shoulder the consequences too from collapsed projects. Doubtless other countries will have to bail out huge parts of their financial sectors and possibly more.
My personal prediction, based on little more than speculation: severe recession like 2008, but bailouts stop it from getting worse.
