@gahlord @db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci Agreed. I deploy high rep MTA's often, and have run my own for over 20yrs, Postfix+Postscreen/Dovecot/OpenDKIM/Procmail/ClamAV stacks mostly. But to be honest it is non-trivial without sufficient knowledge and diligence, esp today. Many boxes to tick, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, rDNS/PTR ++.
Once secured, & running, it is however very low maintenance, with A+ in tests and delivery. A beautiful thing to be free of the big mailboxes or managed hosting.
@gahlord @db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci A decent 'quick fix' to all this, for those that want to self-host mail but don't want to dive into the weeds, is MailCow. Docker, quick up and go. Never as fast nor flexible as a native MTS, esp if you want to hook up webmail clients, do relaying for trusted hosts, multiple mailing domains etc, but will get you there for the basics.

Or it performs similar logic iterating in reverse & rounding sizes down.
This memblock allocator may occasionally use a `kalloc` memory allocator, but I'll discuss that another day! For now...
One of those wrappers triggers a panic upon failure, crashing the system! Which has a wrapper to handle variadic args.
It crashes by ensuring a `panic_on_warn` flag's unset, disables IRQs & debugging features, carefully considers having another CPU core handle the crash (via a helper) & shuts down, ...
... grabs a lock, validates noone else is panicking, configures the loglevel to "motormouth" (lol!), increments a counter or runs CPU-specific code to break out of any spinlocks, formats & outputs the given error message with an added prefix, validates its state outputting any additional errors, ensures any GDB clients receive the remainder of the debug ringbuffer by triggering a CPU-specific breakpoint, possibly attempts to execute (via a helper) a crash image under lock, ...
5/6!
... uses CPU-specific code to crash other cores outputting their stacktraces, possibly (via a helper) briefly grab a lock to trigger the console to (according to comments) output the rest of its text, invokes under lock all callbacks in an atomic linkedlist (via a helper), configurably outputs (via a helper, & more in turn) various system info, carefully (via a helper) invokes each callback in a "dumper" atomic linkedlist, attempts running the kexec image again under lock, ...
6/7!!
under lock (via a helper) locates an "unblank" console & under its lock invokes that method on it, releases (via helper) all debugging locks via a global atomic outputting any queued errors, flushes anything remaining in the debugging ringbuffer, possibly retries that more forcefully, sets `panic_blink` to `no_blink`'s value if it didn't already have one, possibly outputs a message that its restarting & spinlocks until its time,
7.2/7.2!!
... possibly saves a reboot mode & (via wrappers) CPU-specifically reboots, possibly outputs a SPARC-specific message, runs some special Assembly code if on S390 CPUs, outputs a final message & performs a final flush, reenables IRQs, & repeatedly calls a callback while delaying the given amount of time & petting a watchdog timer.
Unless there's better assembly to use shutdown may involve a low-powered infinite loop.
8/8 Fin for today! That got long! Next: CPU IDs!

This weird little sloppy quick sketch has been on my hard drive since August 11, 2016, (more than 10 years!) labelled "droney e7 tuning."
I keep forgetting about it. I think it could be a chorus for some shoegazey thing. I dunno. I have a THOUSAND bits like this. I'm going to will them all to my son.

@bgm this is the closest thing to The Bends-era Radiohead I've ever heard from you, and I am here for it. Lovely!
(When I was around 19 I listened exclusively to the bends in my car for over a year. So that is a compliment.
Of course, i spent the following year refusing to listen to music with drumset, so there's no accounting for taste.)

Flesh-eating screwworms are feasting on pets; 4 dogs and cat attacked this week

@arstechnica there actually were illegal immigrants trying to enter the US and eating the cats, eating the dogs. Just not those that the Orange Romulus Augustus said were doing that. His fault. On both counts.
