@db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci I’ve been running off my own email via a hosted domain since maybe 2000 or 2001 and really haven’t had too many problems. Eventually I am going to save up for one of the @JulianOliver courses and get it onsite.
There are occasional bumps in owning email but nothing terrible, gmail etc goes down too. I also host a few things for friends, one of whom is a reasonable risk as a target for disruption and this hasn’t been a problem either.
I estimate I average 15minutes each month thinking about the technical aspects of my email hosting.
@gahlord @db @loriemerson @kupfers @mario_angst_sci Agreed. I deploy high rep MTA's often, and have run my own for over 20yrs, Postfix+Postscreen/Dovecot/OpenDKIM/Procmail/ClamAV stacks mostly. But to be honest it is non-trivial without sufficient knowledge and diligence, esp today. Many boxes to tick, DMARC, SPF, DKIM, rDNS/PTR ++. But once done, secured, and running, it is indeed very low maintenance, with A+ scores and delivery. A beautiful thing to be free of the big mailboxes.
The choice is obvious
In honour of the season, the code "SPOOKYTIME" at checkout will get new subscribers (Latte's Worth, Crow's Nest, and Nest Egg tiers) 50% off their first month at my Patreon, until 10/31.

@mike me too. 'tis the season 🫡
Huh. Bit ironic that the best tip I received for a fully Canadian email hosting service just came through a non-bridged Bsky account replying to my bridged projection !
Ok, Fedi, tell me about NorthMail for personal or small orgs that need minimal, but own-domain mail services? I actually really need only ONE account per “organization”, with forwarded aliases managed by me or the org. As inexpensively as is sustainable for a non-enshittifying service. Eg, we can pay, but not huge bills.

We knew asking you to give Linux a try was a big ask, but did you take the step? How’d it go? If you made the leap, tell your friends with this badge! https://www.eff.org/pages/i-want-opt-out-major-operating-systems
Here we go again 🙄 #NHLJets
"This update adds support for Linux and Steam Deck, along with WASD keyboard movement and other features"
So uh, this game already had Linux support and I remember playing with WASD, so... what's up with that? Oh, the game's been sold to someone new who's using "AI" to give it a spruce up? I guess that tracks :/
@lumi I prefer the term "diversity" of the ecosystem, which emphasizes user choice.
"Fragmentation" is the other side of the coin, when portability becomes difficult because people are scattered among N incompatible projects. That is what has happened for at least a good decade with various OSes implementing their own incompatible extensions to POSIX.
Diversity without fragmentation is achievable, but it needs a focus on collaboration. Let's hope the next generation of Unix-like OSes is smarter about this than the previous/current one was.
Key takeaways from the 2026 Canada Pension Plan Investment Board public meetings

This morning while once again affirming that William Adama had the right idea about not trusting technology, I remembered my favorite part of the Battlestar Galactica remake: Ronald D. Moore's podcast talking about the episodes. Some of them were roundtables with cast and crew, resulting in some really funny stuff.
Direct links to mp3s of these moments, since past Jer thoughtfully cut them out:
1. The time that Edward James Olmos was convinced that sleep deprivation would result in mass suicides, hired a sleep expert expecting them to confirm it.

I once won a pair of shoes by being the first caller to correctly identify Jackson Brown as the singer of some song. Back when radio stations still had live DJs playing records.
@Dougfir Ha! Shoes?!?!
