We at the #FSF have a few favorite free programs that we use regularly, such as #UptimeKuma, #GIMP, and #Emacs. What are some of your favorites?
Fedizen has been updated to 1.1.0-beta.21! There should be some improvements in some of the logic behind groups and the social UI, as well as Mastodon client support. While it's difficult to detail every little change, hopefully some quality-of-life adjustments will be noticeable!

@dgar
There was a bardlet named "Dan"
Whose poetry would never scan
The problem, he said
Is all in my head
For I try to stick as many syllables onto the last line as I can.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.
– George
@georgetakei We travel with our hearts, onward to the stars. With Walter. 🖖 ✨
Well this is eleventy-million kinds of Fucked Up. LA Times (who once contracted with me as a freelance reviewer and whom I struggled to get paid by) asserts that *merely reading its website* constitutes a permanent waiver of your right to sue it under *any circumstances*. This means that freelancers like me who read the website would lose the right to sue the company if we got stiffed. #consenttheater #bindingarbitration #dickovers
@pluralistic That LA times "read this article and you are bound to our terms of service" thing violates an informal, but important aspect:
This is *not* a clearly accepted-by-you license. This is kind of a half-way station on the way between the LA times not saying anything (but asserting you are bound to the license) and a full click through license (which is a much stronger argument that you actually mentally understood and agreed.)
A click-through license has the "accept" trigger next to the actual license text - that's why a lot of 'em put the button at the end and you have to scroll through the whole thing.
Eric Goldman at Univ Santa Clara has articulated this stuff far better than I could.
Поздравьте меня с первым нормальным швом.
@petez Чувак, от души! Я знаю, к этому долго идут, сам еще не дошел.

So sad to hear that Walter Koenig has died 😭
Of course everyone remembers him as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek but I think he rather stole the show as PSI Corp officer Alfred Bester in Babylon 5 (he looked like he enjoyed the role too).
Be seeing you, Mr Koenig. 😢
Поздравьте меня с первым нормальным швом.
We rely on each other for information, informal knowledge stores for medicine, politics, social arrangements. We have a culture unique to us, difficult for outsiders to truly grasp. It feels like operating in an entirely distinct world, one in which there is an expectation of some base level of support that I struggle to replicate within the other communities that I’m a part of.
Oof was I wrong about @protonprivacy
They all start with the greatest of intentions but always find ways to disappoint when they have enough of a customer base
Proton is just another example of ‘why we cannot have nice things’
@stux @protonprivacy how so?
full-on snooze boogie woogie
