Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers
Are PDF viewers a common student project? I always assumed the file standard must be a labyrinthine mess given all the features they’ve crammed into it over the years. Or is there some popular library that takes 99% of the work out of it?
It’s a student project. Quick & dirty so they can get a grade. They probably just link to libpdf.so and call it a day?
@gedeonm WAIT, PAVEL CHEKOV WAS NOT RUSSIAN?
@Eggfreckles @gedeonm
> Koenig's parents were Russian Jewish immigrants from the Soviet Union; his family had been living in Lithuania when they emigrated, and they shortened their surname from Königsberg to Koenig.[5]
Koenig's father was a communist who was investigated by the FBI during the McCarthy era.[6]

Reddit's r/opensource bans AI slop, and quite a few humans for good measure
Meanwhile on reddit.
Honestly kind of sounds like lemmy.world mods like Jordan Lund tho…
To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.
That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.
The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.

I had an interesting day.
Due to fire alarms and gurgling water noises,
fire trucks arrived to break into the house across the street that's been empty for months.
So I finally met the person across the street who lives in the house next to the empty house, and he's unemployed and maybe retired if he can't find anything.
@jmac On the good side, the person across the street knows enough Estonian that I learned that language has the same word for blue as Finnish.
(It was a good kind of interesting!)

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.
– George
@evansteiner But beyond that stuff, having more people paid to work on these projects will help prevent catastrophic problems, which is vastly preferable to just waiting for them to happen (because something so important is being maintained by a lone volunteer) and then assuming the world will rally to quickly come up with a fix before the hackers get through.
@siracusa I'm with you in principle, but sad in practice. When I've tried to implement such things, even in large orgs of 500+ engineers, it's been SO HARD to convincingly show the value. And it's not just inept corporate leadership. We, the engineers, often fail to frame the value in business terms, instead building ineffective CoEs with little accountability. My question was meant to sharpen my own thinking and approach, and I appreciate your perspective.

We are starting to talk about probability in my first year seminar class tomorrow, so I’m hunting around the house for dice. Would it surprise you to learn that I couldn’t find any ordinary dice?
@henryseg I honestly expected dice with gear teeth that would magically form standing shapes when rolled in a group.
Next week, on CBS All-Access Commander Saru can't stop watching reruns of 2 Broke Girls on CBS although could have solved everything if the transporter had just worked.
@emmadavidson can't see any tellie showing either gambling sports or Fasc24 which is a nice change.
@smallsees didn't see any pokies either

As someone in a community impacted by the deluge of AI slop projects…good. These are good policies, the overwhelming amount of crap being churned out makes sifting through it as a human, untenable; the only sane solution is to restrict it and ban the peddlers.
