Thing I'm chewing on this week to get through burnout and demand avoidance (which are inextricably linked):

asking myself what is one thing I can do today to make future-me grateful. It frames tasks as a form of self care and coming from a place of compassion and love.

It has been working so far. I don't celebrate it, as putting too much of my own inner focus on my own success is a form of pressure and does not feel good.

I try only to think about it as "I love you, future self. Here is a gift you can enjoy the results of later when you're feeling tired cuz that's pretty much a constant"

Meanwhile on reddit.

Honestly kind of sounds like lemmy.world mods like Jordan Lund tho…

To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.

That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.

The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.

@georgetakei Godspeed Chekov! :heart:

I’m torn. I do want you to care, because people like you with your head in the right place not caring may have contributed to politics getting to the place it is.

But I want politics to be boring again, too. So shall we say, when this blows over, back to caring intermittently, like a little, around elevation times?

@daringfireball only a 60hz screen, which is a real bummer (miss?)

New York graffiti.

I am a doctor. I wish that I could prescribe dildos to people. We could in the Victorian era. The amount of people these days getting random household objects stuck in their arses is getting ridiculous. Please, you're an adult, just get a proper and safe dildo, for fuck's sake.

Server Patching Notes - Roy Tang:

That’s seeming like a media problem. If Trump is being overplayed in the media more than former presidents than wouldn’t it be safe to assume that’s a form of like psychological warfare to keep people always o edge about, “the next move” or some other stupid shit?

That makes me appreciate it even more!

"2020 Patriotic Image" 🤮

It wasn’t nearly as bad with Obama and Biden (unless you count still hearing about Trump every fucking day). Even Bush, while shitty, it wasn’t like “What horrible thing am I going to read about today?” as soon as I woke up every morning.

1. They do not all write the same. There’s benchmarks for this and if you just do a basic search or actually test them yourself you’ll see that their output differs wildly. Not only between vendors, but been versions of the same model. For example, Claude stopped using em dashes for most output for a while but now they’ve come back.
2. There’s vastly more than “a handful of models”! Are you living under a rock‽ Go to HuggingFace today and then again tomorrow. There’s going to be a dozen new ones! Probably more!
3. Changing the back end configuration even a tiny bit can vastly change the output of a model.

any other update?

there are three* questions that can help you when someone comes to you with a problem they're experiencing:

1. are we processing or planning?
this is the one you hear about in romantic relationships, where one partner wants to vent and the other starts trying to move the world instead of listening. listening is the first thing.

2. do you want my help?
please, *please* be prepared to accept no. the first time. and they may still want your advice.

3. do you want me to help you do this or to do this for you?
*only* if there's a yes on 2. it's situational! if something is hard for them but trivial for you, they may prefer for you to just do it. other times they may just want support, or help with a specific aspect. a request for help is not a surrender of autonomy.

* there are more than three, but roughly these three in roughly this order tend to help me in that situation. and sometimes they've already volunteered some of this information. listening is first.

In my adult lifetime we’ve had 20-years of Democratic Presidents, all of whom were great leaders.
