This attitude is why the internet is full of ads. Doing shit for free doesn’t happen on an empty stomach. I’d rather pay a fair price for software and services I use. I’m not saying anyone’s pricing is fair, just pointing out I don’t agree with this behavior.

🚨 Massive shots fired in The 2026 War on Christmas!

The Trump Org's online shop is out with its "HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE."

(Maybe you don't need to keep the "Christ" in Christmas if you've got "Trump" in the Advent calendar?)

I don't want the algorithm to penalize me if I stop posting regularly again (mainly Twitter but I crosspost), but if I keep getting caught up in the cross-cultural drama of the week my doctor will have words for me during my next blood draw, so I need to figure out something else. Any ideas?

Love HTML? I think you might enjoy Kelp, my new UI library powered by modern CSS and Web Components.

Ahh. So you’re fine with all the ads on YouTube?

No, that’s why I pay for YouTube too. If I wouldn’t use it as much that the price is worth it, I would likely not use it at all (besides the irregular link thrown over my fence ever once in a while).

Have you noticed how the people who use platforms like fucking youtube also appear to be using AI for their thumbnails?

“This mass surveillance technology has crept up on us in some ways, [but] the public outcry is here now, and it’s very loud – and very hard for lawmakers and police to ignore," EFF’s Saira Hussain told The Center Square. https://www.thecentersquare.com/california/article_dca8d6f6-5874-45ed-8ba0-a34e86170fe3.html

@davidgerard As someone (unwilling) embedded in AI dev culture, this is the dream. People want a particular AI tool and process that removes the necessity of reading the generated code. I just read a "state of the industry" report that described "PR review theater", where people would "review" pull requests but not actually read them, in the "best case" scenario throwing them at the AI and interrogating the AI about them before just approving them.

At work we have a consultant teaching us "AI security" best practices1 and he says he doesn't even read the generated code anymore, and encourages us to do the same. Does it matter that, as a consultant, he doesn't have to maintain the systems he consults on? I certainly think it does, but apparently I'm in the minority.

My biggest hope with the AI bubble was that it would burst soon enough that people wouldn't immediately switch to open models on local hardware, but I unfortunately think that ship has sailed. Most devs I know would saw their hands off before hand-typing code again.

This is the Bad Place.

1 They boil down to "don't give the AI privileges it shouldn't have or it will fuck you".

@dexter @tubsta I would hope for snozzberries.

HVAC work on my house starts next week

I block all ads from all sites on the internet.

I pay money to the fediverse hosting foundation because hosting software costs money. I pay creators to create content because creating content costs them time and if they are going to do that thing, they need money.

Im okay with it tbh. The everything must be free on the internet mindset is what led ads working its way in everywhere.
