Playable demos for video games were an amazing thing that we've had lost almost entirely by the time we arrived in the 2010s, until they were brought back with a bang five years ago thanks to the Steam Next Fests events. A lot of indie games have been getting tons of success thanks to game demos. And now that we've successfully got that back, we may be losing it again.
Indeed, in its path to ruin absolutely everything it can for as many people as it can, AI is now ruining Steam Next Fests and game demos for pretty much everyone involved.
You may have notice, if you tried to browse a bit, that this year's Next Fest is an absolute clusterfuck. With more than 7,000 demos, almost double that of last year's number and I'm sure you can take a guess as to why there are so many demos. It's because the vast majority of them are AI generated slop.
Some developers saw the writing on the wall, because last year already had glimpses of that problem and the slop machines have only gotten more capable since, so they just opted out pushing their demo entirely. Not wanting to get lost in all this crowd, or even, not wanting to be associated with it.
But if that wasn't depressing enough, AI is ruining game demos in another, much more existential way.
You may have seen a boom in the modding and reverse engineering scene, recently, and if you're in the know, just by reading this, you may have already caught up to what I'm about to say. There has been some pretty huge updates to some LLMs, lately. New models were released. And that has allowed people to take a game, feed it to the model, and letting it do what would usually take an entire team of passionate and dedicated people years to do, in minutes. That is: Fully reverse engineering a game.
It's why you've been seeing so games crossover lately, it's why you've seen this weird blend of Modern Warfare 2 and Skate 3 going around, among others. This is causing ripples throughout the industry, it's a massive shockwave that is completely reshaping how modding is done, and it is scaring the shit out of some indie developers wanting to release a demo for Next Fest. For some, it's a complete show stopper with several teams and solo devs backing out of the event last minute because of this.
The fear is, and it's sadly completely justified: If we give people access to a demo of our game, someone can take it, reverse engineer it, and vibecode their way to a minimum viable slop product in just days, beating us to our own game's release months before we're actually done with it.
I think Steam Next Fest is over. We had our fun while we could, but we can't have that anymore, because we have to have AI. As if the gaming industry needed more issues to deal with. What is happening right now is cataclysmic for independent developers and the entire industry as a whole is now going to have to reshape itself around the capabilities of these LLMs. I fucking hate it.
