Since Collins thinks Manchin has solid independent cred, it’s a good time to remind people that Joe Manchin’s daughter ran up the price of epinephrine autoinjectors (Epipens) around 300% for no reason beyond pure profit. She is responsible for the preventable death of many children and adults. Joe Manchin facilitated this, and protected her in Congress. Fuck Joe Manchin and his yacht.
@neatnik Will social.lol update its cert in the next couple days or does that need a manual poking?
@zackboehm Yep, they’re issued for 160 hours (around six days) and automatically renewed within a couple days of expiration. Been running these since March without any issue! 👍

I've seen people suggesting that the problems with PHP should be viewed of a case of an internet-critical foundation receiving very little financial support from its users, and normally I'd consider that compelling, but honestly I'd much rather spend money to get the PHP removed from my servers than spend money to keep PHP itself maintained
@mcc I very much agree as far as I remember PHP was originally intended as a templating language and it sort of growing out of proportion like I deliberately avoid it when setting self hosted stuff up because of both security concerns and the fact that most modern PHP apps
Don’t forget gutting USAID and research funding, including children’s cancer research, so they can instead pay for the hired thugs in ICE. Legitimately one of the most shameful things the US has ever done in terms of deaths caused, in the short and long term.

A university course is currently trying out Pixelfed
A few weeks ago, we started noticing a number of applications on pixelfed.ca, where the user would say that they needed to register for a course. I don’t have full confirmation, but I’m fairly certain that this is a legitimate wave of signups from students at a Canadian university.
I’m sharing this post for a few reasons:
- I thought it was neat
Personally, I’m excited that people are trying out Pixelfed and using it in coursework like this. If you are one of the students, now seeing this post, welcome! :) I hope that the project goes well, and that you have a pleasant experience on the platform. Feel free to share any and all feedback.
- Some of the posts may look like spam at first
You might be seeing similar looking posts from different accounts on your feed. My guess is that the course has specific requirements and example templates. However, there’s also plenty of real content (ex. artwork, photography, etc.), so I don’t think it’s going to be disruptive
- Please report anything that seems off
As always, you can report inappropriate content through the UI. For urgent issues, please email us at support@pixelfed.ca. You can also DM admin@lemmy.ca as there is overlap with our Pixelfed and Lemmy team members.

Perhaps odd.
I love Halloween movies and like many a horror movie, especially of late, but I've never seen a single Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street movie. I was born in 1972.

@blakespot Friday the 13th series is mostly a grind of bad script between fun kills. 1, 2, 3 are maybe all anyone needs to see. So unless you lucked into seeing the early ones (maybe too young; I'm 2 years older & was not supposed to be let in!), it's understandable to have skipped them.
Nightmare is pretty much all great, hilarious. Just spooky enough, & a few jumpscares, to be "horror". Robert Englund is a treasure.
90s Trek was a weird blend of stage-like acting and regular tv acting. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s often kind of stiff and sometimes exaggerated and doesn’t feel very natural at all, but it’s weird how well it works and feels almost timeless as a result of that. It sits firmly below realism which counterintuitively seems to actually aid the suspension of disbelief at times?
@bigzaphod I noticed the same thing, especially in the first few seasons. The acting in TOS was pretty theatrical also, and I wonder if the TNG actors were influenced by that.
That's not a style I'd normally say I like, but I think the reason I never got into more recent Trek shows is because they *didn't* have that quality. Something about the way TNG doesn't feel as TV-ish does feel very timeless.
Maybe not a good comparison, but it reminds me of the appeal of 8-bit games for some reason.
One side started war with iran while other side didn’t
One side destroyed relationship with strongest allies for nothing while other side didn’t.
One side went to war with people on the streets with ICE and lowered recruitment requirements while other side didn’t.
One side gave us Pete Hegseth while otherside didn’t.
One side started tariff war for nothing while other side didn’t.
Both sides same though I guess?

Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
E: Many people have replied comparing this to the Reddit “hug of death” or “The Slashdot effect”. This is not the same at all. Those are legitimate site visits from humans that happen over the course of several hours. This is the result of several thousand servers all automatically fetching the same image simultaneously , and without any human involvement, and potentially next to zero human traffic to the site, which is why I compared it to a botnet or DDOS attack.
UBUNTU TOUCH in 2026: it's really close!

Now is not the time to be complacent. Polls don't win elections, votes do.
4 is a perfectly good key as long as the adversary only gets 3 guesses.
Abstaining from voting is just a vote to let others choose for you. It does not exempt you from the system.
@durchaus jau... und wenn Microdoof mal wieder einen Patch versaut, was gerade in letzter Zeit häufiger vorkam, dann bootet nicht mal mehr mein Linux...?
@heiseonline
@christin @heiseonline kann vorkommen. Windows und Linux am besten auf verschiedenen Festplatten installieren und per UEFI bestimmen, von welcher das System booten soll. Dadurch umgeht man die Probleme.
Oh hey, cool, I got Gmail from Mr. Sundar Pichai advising me that Your Email Address Was Among The Randomly Selected Google Email Award Prize Payment Of $2.900,000,000 Million United States Ddollars.
It must be real, it comes from a Totally Real Person at a Gmail Address!!!!
