Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

No, you just worked at bad places
Sure, but there are a lot of bad places. I bet the majority of engineers work in bad places like this.

PHP releasing patches tomorrow for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619
Fixed versions will be 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, 8.2.35
All others are end-of-life but are still vulnerable - the vulns date back to versions from 2004 onwards.
These projects get a lot of criticism. Why, and is it deserved?

Pick a classic car you would happily convert to electric.
1972 XA Falcon GT coupe.
@NanoRaptor I would randomly say a 1991 VW Vanagon Westfalia.
We are aware of servers that have disabled uploads are getting suspicious user registrations, likely to test the php vulnerability.
Please shut down your server until you can patch PHP later today.
@pixelfed that's it, I'm writing my next website in C (🤭)

Are we asking the wrong questions about dark matter?
People often bring up dark matter and wonder whether it exists or not.
But nearly every astrophysicist has moved on to ask, "what is dark matter?"
Here's how we'll find out.
