I disagree with the quoteposter though.
I am the type who tends to work backwards. Rather than understanding the fundamentals, the theory, and then the practical, I would like to actually do the thing first, then understand how and why it works.
I believe gatekeeping is an important part of any community that seeks to retain people you'd fraternise with. When it is infiltrated by normies under the guise of accessibility, that spells a death knell for the special interest IMO. It has happened too many times before for me not to notice.
@llamasoft_ox @gilesgoat I keep seeing it referred to as Burnout Star Wars more than anything else and I can really see how some people would make the connection with the boosting and the crash cams
@Angelo @gilesgoat oh yeah burnout of course. I believe some of the Burnout devs worked on it too.
@dch why would there be internet facing php? Php should never be exposed to internet anyhow from opnsense. If one goes and changes that in purpose, (s)he is peggng for the trouble.
@ikkeT you clearly have not had contact with many users.
It’s unbelievably common for people to enable their firewall admin on the remote interface because “convenience” - they don’t want to get locked out!
And they often do not think that their appliance itself is really a PHP app, hence my reminder.
I assume it has hardening applied, but even so this is not a security-forward configuration.
@rysiek well, yes, and should we just give up because of this?
@gdr who said anything about giving up?
The only thing I am pointing out in this thread is that saying "closed source is dead because LLMs can do a gimmic and decompile some binary, kinda" is naïve at best.
That, to me, is what giving up looks like. "We're done here everyone, closed source is dead".
Instead the fight must continue and we must be clear about what a dangerous moment this is for software, and more broadly computational, freedom.
🎉 Manyfold v0.153.0 is out; it’s just a small one though, mainly a security update in response to the eMudhra CA leak.

there's a disingenuous argument i see go completely unchallenged all the time, which is "this <computer thing> deserves to be respected and celebrated, because it underpins the entire world and you wouldn't have {products, services, entertainment, electricity, food, etc} without it". like, we had supermarkets before SQL. we had maps before Google Maps. the world functioned successfully, it just wasn't on Computer. now it *needs* Computer, when it didn't before. strange to brag about that, really

@mcc Reads like a fake CVE too. "Cause a bunch of mischief"? "reporoduced"?
@phealy3330 @ngrbdx @bvibber heh, you can reply with this

Important announcement from BSD Cafe
@stefano
Thank you for sanely maintaining BSD Cafe services!
"CVE-2026-99999" is the fakest sounding CVE name. That is like Hideo Kojima or Kotaro Uchikoshi had just learned what a "CVE" is and decided to write a plot point about a macguffin mega-CVE that is going to cause enormous problems for the protagonists
I didn’t lose any money this quarter, so technically I’ve made $80 billion more than Anthropic.

The day started with a major Google Cloud outage in Europe, proceeded swiftly to the eMudhra root cert dumpsterfuck, and now the critical PHP vulns are starting to hit.
Cool, cool.
