TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
I also have a weird ask for the fedi. I don't know if anyone on here does commissions for Japanese or Korean calligraphy (shodo / seoye - hopefully I got that right).
My initial training was in Japanese Zen and I am currently studying Seon (Korean Zen). I would like to decorate my meditation space with something that is at once appropriate and human made.
Please feel free to either boost this, retag it to reach the right people or reach out to me if you would be interested. My additional goal is to support people who put love and time into their craft.
I got a midnight message from a volunteer within our local community food group telling me they're taking down some of our servers until this PHP vuln is patched.
If you're in IT or technically proficient, supporting a local mutual aid or charity group is an amazing way of helping out.
(A lot of people ask me how a person who is unable to meet in person or be physically in proximity with others can help out in community groups - this is an amazing way to do that.)
