Servers & Stability: The Fediverse Host – Victor – E99

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
it seems like ideally it shouldn’t attempt to preview the link before a user tries to view the content. i guess that would increase latency for users though
These projects get a lot of criticism. Why, and is it deserved?
we wake up electrified out of the coma by our own souls’ airplanes roaring over the roof they’ve come to drop angelic bombs the hospital illuminates itself
imaginary walls collapse
O skinny legions run outside
O starry-spangled shock of mercy the eternal war is here
O victory forget your underwear we’re free

@citrusui This is somewhat offtopic as it's not precisely a DAW but what do you think about BespokeSynth?
(Note I haven't looked at it in a while so if it's gone slop I wouldn't know)
@mcc I think this could be a fun modular environment to play with. I've tried a few but have a hard time getting over the learning curve. The few I've tried, SunVox, Pure Data (for 2 seconds), Max4Live, Plogue Bidule, and another one which I do not remember (is also open source but green) seem very powerful but require thinking in a way that is not immediate to me.
I've had success with GRM Atelier, Reaktor, & SoundGrain. But then, with the exception of Reaktor, I quickly run into limitations.
Yo yo yo! Wazzap y'all?
@dgar yo! I'm doing a small market data analysis and enhoying it very much, better do something productive soon though
@futzle have you tried offering treats if he comes out of hiding? I hear peanut butter is effective (according to Chase, who thinks I should give him more of it)
@emmadavidson (We needed a piece of Denta Stix to get him out. He still turned into a limpet when I tried to lift him into the car.)

"CVE-2026-99999" is the fakest sounding CVE name. That is like Hideo Kojima or Kotaro Uchikoshi had just learned what a "CVE" is and decided to write a plot point about a macguffin mega-CVE that is going to cause enormous problems for the protagonists
@mcc The CVE you find a Python file in the tests/ directory.

hey do you want to do a collab where you reply to me asking if you want to do a collab
some people have interpreted my description of my post as a constraint on their responses and you don't have to do that but it is very funny
