Meta's Muse is exactly what Google's Gemini and Apple's Siri should have been all along. I didn't know what I wanted to get. It told me exactly what I needed to get.

Finally we have created the random number "4" from the famous XKCD strip "do not just make your random number 4"

“Why are all of these evil billionaires…”
Well, let’s start with the billionaire part. Would someone who hasn’t a phenomenal asshole just keep accumulating wealth after the first couple hundred million? They don’t need it. They can’t use it. A human with empathy and a desire to do good would be spending it lifting others out of suffering.
@mcnado Once you have enough, it's surprisingly difficult to spend it all.
Today's Low Quality Ad is for this Foraging Freak Pin. I've gotten into foraging for mushrooms lately, it's surprisingly safe and easy. All you need to do is pick a mushroom that looks edible and pray it isn't one of the 1,000 identical looking poisonous mushrooms.

I only really need an instance to be stable, uncontroversial, and to have a low block/blocked by count (I can filter out for myself what I want and don’t want to see). I’d switch instances if those preferences were not being met to a degree that noticeably impacted my experience using it.

1 of them will cause me to change instance:
1: Rude People
2: lemmy.world defederates my instance
3: bad moderation or mods

Unreasonable moderation.
That is to say, I have no problem with reasonable moderation or following well-established rules, but if there comes a point where it seems that the admins and mods are abusing their power, then I would probably lose trust in their leadership of that instance.
@glyph I'm substantially more worried about compilers for languages that have been accepting slop. I don't know of any slop-free alternatives for C++17 compilers for example. I'm hoping GCC's current anything-goes policy for tests and only-trivial-slop policy for the compiler itself wont cause too much damage, but I'm considering version pinning GCC.

I mean, the threat was, but the fediverse reacted and most instances (that I know of) just defederated preemptively.
This blog post seems to point and laugh that “see, we hadn’t needed to put out that fire, it’s fully extinguished now”. Well, yes. Because we put it out.
But there is also the point that Meta users and Fedizens didn’t really have any interest in federating with each other. In that respect, the outcome was fully foreseeable, and Meta’s attempt pure signal value for the corporation.

Everyone needs to see this and also acknowledge why reverse engineering is a super power.

That second solution is what I thought of as doing as I read this. It doesn’t rely on a third party service being up. And that instance has to do that work anyway. So why not just share the results with others?

HTTP signatures are not a default feature, the baseline is ECDHE key exchange with forward secrecy and deniability.
There isn’t even an official standard for redistributable signed page metadata. There’s just prototypes

The same way you know the rest of the data hasn’t been tampered with - you don’t. And when you find untrustworthy instances, you defederate from them.
