Meta ordered to name execs who approved torrenting for AI training
Meta argues nobody “decided” to pirate books to train AI.

AI isn’t a “tool” - it’s a set of subroutines built on the stolen labor and property of others using exploitative amounts of energy and resources to confidently make up something that’s wrong.
That’s a tool in the same way a hammer is a tool - if you stole it from your neighbor, it was coin-operated and gas-powered, and it often turned into a screwdriver or a halibut midswing and then obsequiously apologized.
GIGO was true pre-GenAI, but is no longer. You can take good data, train a model on it with the greatest care, do a well-structured prompt, and still get garbage out. Honestly, a lot of boomers and older GenX embrace GenAI because they still think GIGO applies without realizing what a broken assumption that is.
It is a tool. Like I said, garbage in, garbage out. I wouldn’t use it for something I don’t know what the result should be.
It’s also good for gathering information, papers on subjects. Were is the stolen labour in that?
Removing almost all proprietary software from my Phone and PC: how I'm doing it!
📣 I’m looking for a new role. Ideally, as a Staff+ Designer, but I’ll consider design leadership roles, too. I’m a specialist in #designSystems and #designOps—would love to remain in this space, but open to generalist, 0→1 product design as well.
I have:
→ 18+ years across design and front-end roles
→ co-founded and led a successful observability SaaS
More information on my personal website. Boosts and intros to kind folks are very welcome!

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
@SamanthaJaneSmith oh wow, that company looks really cool. I wonder if they're not legally allowed to list the synthesizers their programmers are for prominently on their website.
It does tell you when you click through, but I'm not quite enough of a nerd to know every single synth by its design language, lol.
@alisynthesis @SamanthaJaneSmith @u0421793 agreed, very nice looking stuff!
here's some info about the giant php bug dropping tomorrow:

hopefully mastodon doesnt absolutely destroy the video quality, but it appears to be unauth php rce.
which means every firewall on the planet thats not patched thats just php under the hood and has its management interfaces exposed is potentially a target
