I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.

I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.

This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

For 3 days, I’ve been crying out for help, and my cries are met with silence. My little Hamza is sick, and my husband is an amputee who cannot work. I’m watching my family suffer, feeling helpless and forgotten. 😭 How much longer must I beg before someone hears a mother’s pain? Please, don’t abandon us. Even €1 could make a difference. 🙏💔

"Using disc images on your PS2 is so easy, you simply have to install FreeMcBoot from a small-format FAT32 USB 2.0 drive onto a spare MagicGate memory card using FreeDVDBoot and then boot up and configure OPL from an ELF file, after which you can rip the games using dd on a *nix machine, but only if they're DVD-format games, because BIN/CUE isn't supported, then you have to spin up a Samba 1.x server to serve your rips, and that'll only work for PS2 games unless you also install PopStarter, which will be easier if you can load it from a FAT32 MicroSD loaded on an MCP or MCP2, because PopStarter can't find Samba shares the same way OPL does unless you use a RetroNAS or similar to symlink the files into multiple concurrent share directories. It's so easy."

yes, the idea being that someone actually does heavy lifting instead of letting Google and the CA/Browser cartel do it badly on your behalf

@techokami @cr1901 @pinskia It's a capitalist-brainwormed growth hack.

Accelerate a library ecosystem for your new language by outsourcing it to randos and seeing what becomes popular, rather than actually curating and engineering it.

@ariadne Maybe not but my phone's 5G just connected to Ariadne Telecom and now I can't get back to my own carrier.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

@NanoRaptor horse

I had to think about this one for a while but I think for me it’d probably be like a giant bagel shop and I’m throwing sliced bagel halves at you (and the schmear would probably apply a damage over time effect)

Thing is, Fediverse is not a product
