Fediverse
Thing is, Fediverse is not a product
RE: https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/117455880475309031
GIven the positive traction this post got, I'd like to collect some "benevolent algorithms" we could consider. For example:
* Popular posts among people you follow
* Popular posts on your server
* Popular posts with this hashtag
* What would you suggest???
"popular" is defined as some transparent metric around replies + boosts
@scottjenson @mekkaokereke I'd want an algorithm that's the opposite: show me posts that no one has boosted or liked. Lots of times I see good people trying to engage and being ignored. Maybe because of the non-universal visibility across the Fediverse, I dunno.

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

I finally submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.96 here:
https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/35738
It appears as if GitHub's Continuous Integration checks have passed OK!
It's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.
Thanks to you, aleteoryx, Uilebheist, nowster, koru, daltux, pmjv and anyone else who may have contributed to this release whom I may have inadvertently overlooked!
Again, my apologies for the delay! Traveling without a laptop and then realizing I needed to rework MacPorts' Makefile.patch made this take a lot longer than I would customarily prefer as far as down streaming latency goes.
In unrelated news: Denver now has FOUR Wax Trax Records locations! Mile High DJ Supply's spot in Arvada has a turntable set up reminiscent of DJ Q*Bert's Octagon (facilitatin 4 skratch deejays jammin together with 8 turntables and 4 mixers feedin into one sound system). The Colorado Symphony's performance of compositions they commissioned by Joe Hisaishi was wonderful! Though, Hisaishi was apparently unable to travel to conduct. Here's hoping he will not have difficulties with future travel plans and will be conducting at the SF Symphony for "Hisaishi conducts Hisaishi" since I have a ticket to one of those three shows later this week.

So we need people to just mass post links to bad websites, is what you’re saying.

Thanks for bringing this up. I think in general we need to work on optimisation of Activitypub and Threadiverse implementations of it.

@chockenberry I hope you’re doing okay
@codecaffeine More on that later this week. Need to write it up, but it’s good news.
I often get chided whensoever I happen to mention casual telnet or ftp usage here in the latter days of the early 21st century and I generally take it in stride because I am going to keep doing what I’m going to keep doing and my reasons are my own.
I usually do not reply at all to such chides, but if I did, it’d generally be to utter something along the lines of “having a false sense of security is worse security than having no security mechanisms in place at all.” Days like today are why.
@djsundog what happened? I clearly missed a news story.
