Lost in the steppes
Read something the other day that kinda stuck with me:
“People won’t swim in a pool with a corpse in it but most people do wanna swim in the ocean that definitely has corpses in it. So there is a water to corpse ratio that makes it acceptable”
@stux And yet. I put it to you that people also wouldn’t swim in a pool that has part of a corpse in it, until we’re down to homeopathic levels of corpse [1].
[1] Succussion may not be required to make the pool acceptable though.
"In total, since taking office again, Mr. Trump exempted 202 facilities in 39 states & Puerto Rico from clean-air regulations that were going into effect. Some were among the country’s worst industrial polluters, including chemical manufacturers, copper smelters & coal-burning power plants."
MAHA!
How Trump Gave the Worst Pollu...
@lain Man has never painted a single warhammer mini and it shows.
@rolle @MarloesdeKoning @vosje62 @NRC @marleenstikker Thank you for taking the time to have the message translated into Dutch, Rolle - it’s a particularly good translation, by the way.
Translating my sentences into Finnish—which I’ve tried doing with Deepl onve or twice in the past - used to result in strange sentences (I checked it by translating it into Dutch), so I eventually gave up on that. 😃
Three native languages... wow... which ones are they? Is that common where you live?
To try to get through the passing waves of fever, it's DVD movie night. This time it's the submersible classic: The Abyss.
One thing this movie does well is to depict the panic of trying to revive someone. I can identify.
@bob 😬
We have a weasel in the woodpile!!!
@alexhaist jealous! My woodpile only has boring mice.
Freenet - Services Without Servers

Most platforms usually start ad free and with no restrictions. That’s how they capture a chunk of the market. Then, once they have an established customer base, they typically introduce ads or a subscription so they can actually pay for the hardware and bandwidth the service runs on.
This is what YouTube, Google, and pretty much everyone did. It’s the standard play book.
One-time fees are not feasible for this type of business model. If the server costs are ongoing, meaning you have to pay for the user’s usage constantly, then you need to either constantly charge them too or take money out of your own pocket to subsidize it.
A one-time fee would have to be absurdly high (think hundreds of dollars) to take into account multiple years of usage, otherwise it’s too risky and you’re most likely losing money.
This mindset that subscriptions are all evil when hardware and bandwidth are billed to you every month/year is ridiculous.
Kagi at least is honest from the get go and never tried to trick customers into believing their service would be free forever. That’s what’s actually shitty behavior, when companies put out a product that they then enhsittify for the purposes of extracting profit.
Kagi was a subscription from the get go and told you that’s how they pay their bills, and in return you get the service they promised with no compromises. I’m not arguing whether the price is fair, but at least the business model is honest and doesn’t try to take advantage of me and my data.

This attitude is why the internet is full of ads. Doing shit for free doesn’t happen on an empty stomach. I’d rather pay a fair price for software and services I use. I’m not saying anyone’s pricing is fair, just pointing out I don’t agree with this behavior.

That’s not really my point, but for what it’s worth I don’t mind if I was paying for something and it allowed you to use it because you can’t afford it.
Nothing in life is free, someone’s paying for it. If I use a service, I think it’s fair for me to pay a fair price.
@piero thanks! its a reference to vuxml entry, not so clear I guess. I will extract the CVE numbers and stick them instead.
thanks!
@dch If this is a self reference a note would suffice (ie. see VuXML DB). An UUID is pretty cryptic in its crude form.
@tomroguery@app.wafrn.net
Absolutely. I missed hopping into inboxes/asks and just reaching out to people in a casual easy to reciprocate way that's low energy/effort for both parties. Also this place seems actually safe for queer people unlike Tumblr. I also like the plural features, very considerate. I have some plural frens who'd definitely appreciate that feature if they ever joined WAFRN

That’s not new. They’ve had it for a long time now.
