If you hold your nose and vote, how do you stop getting more of the same?
Theres no option for that. its a systematic failure.

@kraftner @hgg @Zodiac1978 Es könnte ein Backport sein, also ein Hotfix der erst mal die Versionsnummer nicht erhöht. Der Build ist immerhin von gestern (00:00?) und PHP wurde neu gestartet. 😅🤞

On a Discord server, I see some people use the non-default emoji for hand signals like 👋 or 👍. I wasn’t aware there were specific skin tones for those: 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏽👋🏾👋🏿 and 👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿.
The thing is, the only specific skin tones I see are the whitest ones, 👋🏻 and 👍🏻, and I find thant disturbing. I’m wondering whether you’d consider this OK in your community?
(Please boost.)

Per cert, l’icona de Sotavent és una idea de la meva parella 😘
"In Her Kitchen" was created by the American contemporary realist painter Vincent Giarrano.
Yesterday, as I sat here, using a laptop running on Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to connect, by means of a secure tunnel formed by Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to multiple servers, all running Free software written and maintained by volunteers, to apply patches prepared urgently by volunteers to resolve security vulnerabilities, I felt *incredibly* grateful for every single one of those volunteers, who makes the fact that I could do *any* of this possible.
Thank you, genuinely.
I completely agree! 🙏 As a digital artist, I know my 3D art and 4K wallpapers would never reach anyone without the silent, incredible work of these volunteers.
Thank you for everything! If you appreciate art, check my profile bio to see my collection and please follow my journey to support a new artist. ❤️🚀
POLL: Do you use the skin-tone emoji modifiers?
Ok, looks like this is the week of funny experiences.
Customer: "I had an AI check our server and it says the SSH port is open and that's not very secure."
Me: "Yes, you asked us to open it so you could access the server via SFTP (actually, you wanted FTP, but we discussed it a bit and found this compromise). Don't worry, it's only accessible from your IP and you land in a dedicated FreeBSD jail. From there, you can only access the 'exchange' directory on your server, where you can upload and download files without affecting the application."
(NB: I had suggested a VPN, but they declined because it was too complicated.)
Customer: "Yes, but maybe it's still insecure. Can't we close it?"
Me: "No, unless you want to lose access to that directory."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
One hour later:
Customer: "Hi, I think we've found a solution. We've just created an app (!!!) with AI that lets us access the files anyway, but more securely than SSH (!!!). Can we install that and close SSH? Oh, and not in the dedicated jail, but directly in the application's jail, because it needs access to the application's files."
Me: "Frankly, I trust SSH in a dedicated jail, restricted by the firewall, a lot more. I don't think this is a good idea."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
Half an hour later:
Customer: "Ok, now it's secure. I had another AI check it and it found some security issues, but it fixed them all. Can you install it and disable SSH?"
Me: "I strongly advise against it. I can see problems coming."
Customer: "Ok, thanks."
One hour later, my phone rings.
Their internal IT guy (who has access to the machine, which, after all, belongs to them) had given the AI the login credentials to go ahead with the operation.
Except the AI had managed to lock itself out via the firewall, without even starting the app. And now they couldn't get back in.
Fortunately, I had my own access, via VPN, to a separate jail that the AI hadn't touched (or even considered).
Customer: "SORRYSORRYSORRYSORRYSORRY! From now on, we do things your way."
Well, at least it ended well.
PS: The customer knows I'm sharing this story and agreed to it.
(2/2)
And more than the waste, what really gets me: The people who use LLMs for idiotic stuff like this DO NOT INTERACT with the content of the spreadsheet, just dump it into Gemini and then stare at the screen with a dumb grin.
They know nothing. They learn nothing. They have absolutely no idea how anything in the company works, and that is right now.
(3/2) (Yeah, I know)
Another example: We are looking at a complex error log from our server. We try to figure out the root cause in a 30-line error message. It's tough.
Colleague suddenly opens FUCKING GEMINI and dumps the message into that thing.
It returns with a re-phrased version of the first line of the error log, which is the last thing that broke in the causal chain. It tells us nothing new.
So instead of reading the log and learning something we just wasted another five minutes. 😡

Lessons Learned from 15 years of Opting Out of Big Tech -- with thanks to @markhurst, here is the talk I gave at GEL 2026 earlier this month, now online via PeerTube and soon to be found at the Internet Archive.
Enjoy!!!
@cyberlyra @markhurst Nice talk!
I've been at it for many years, but compared to you on a toddler level, but already hitting my head against walls in getting other people realise how bad we should het rid of big tech.
Still a lot to clean, still a lot of legacy as other things in life go first.
Google still there as I still have Android mobiles, locked down as much as possible.
It's annoying that not more apps are build independent from Google, especially banks, and on F-Droid.
The new mobile is e/OS, which compared to the expectations was disappointing.
Jolla marketing didn't reply.
But, busy sorting own things, and still trying to convince other people, which is just horribly difficult and frustrating.

Fediverse
The Britannica entry for the Fediverse is really good
It isn’t that surprising but it is somewhat surprising.
when your private key is the number "4"
@grawity Ah sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like you said that - I meant to pick this up from people I've generally seen suggest that noone should bundle CA certs. Thank you for clarifying, and sorry again. 🥺
@grawity I have rephrased it so it wouldn't sound like you meant that.
Qucik poll for those of you who have deployed #iocaine, or are considering doing so. Currently, I provide pre-compiled binaries of it, a single binary wrapped in various packaging boilerplate. That single binary includes a default script, a default word list, and some text to use for markov chain training embedded in it (and a default configuration too).
This makes deployment reasonably simple: it's a single binary. Drop it, run it, pretty much done. I don't think anyone runs it like that, however.
I'm considering dropping the embedding, and shipping not a single binary, but a tarball instead. A script, some configuration, training data and everything else that was embedded was still in the tarball, and it would be set up so that iocaine can easily find them - they wouldn't be embedded into the binary itself, is all.
Not embedding allows me to drop multiple dependencies, and allows me to remove a whole lot of code that made embedding work.
My question is: how would this affect you? Also feel free to reply with details, if you have some to share.
@neil What did you move to? Moving off NC requires me to host multiple applications to get to the same feature set and even more need to keep an eye on issues.
@kobold https://neilzone.co.uk/2026/02/moving-away-from-nextcloud/
Indeed. I preferred a couple of small applications over the Nextcloud behemoth.

…you didnt read my comment?
Sure, but voters can decide if they want more or less people sacrificed.
Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
