Trouble for OpenSource Office Suites, Wayland fixes 2 major features & other Linux Weekly News
The fact that the information architecture was not designed to:
a) remove identifying information from the body of the tip, and
b) store identity as a separate database with locked down...
That's deep, deep negligence in program design.
"[The hackers] added that the security measures of P3, which was storing Crime Stoppers' tips, were "terrible" and that the platform is still vulnerable."
It's really saying something when the hackers are more responsible than the vendor. They have not yet leaked the contents of the hack except to journalists.
Just found out my friend who entered hospice a few weeks ago passed last night.
I've known him for 26 years. I'll never forget his laugh.
Fuck cancer.

AI isn’t a “tool” - it’s a set of subroutines built on the stolen labor and property of others using exploitative amounts of energy and resources to confidently make up something that’s wrong.
That’s a tool in the same way a hammer is a tool - if you stole it from your neighbor, it was coin-operated and gas-powered, and it often turned into a screwdriver or a halibut midswing and then obsequiously apologized.
GIGO was true pre-GenAI, but is no longer. You can take good data, train a model on it with the greatest care, do a well-structured prompt, and still get garbage out. Honestly, a lot of boomers and older GenX embrace GenAI because they still think GIGO applies without realizing what a broken assumption that is.

Wafrn is wild. I don’t use it regularly, but everytime I go there, there are walls of custom emoji reactions, individuals who post wild stuff I don’t understand and hundreds reacting to it with custom emojis that I don’t know the meaning of. I love it.

I was somewhat interested until I read the last part. I personally have no interest in contributing to projects that rely on AI and I feel like others feel the same way. It results in more code being shipped than necessary and thus requires a lot more time to understand and modify, I’d rather spend that time on projects that don’t rely on LLMs.
php should have done a coordinated release with major distributions because I don't want to wait hours for the update to become available
hmm
ubuntu has their php-fpm package listed as updated on their website but I don't see anything in apt
OpenAI says the PHP flaws, found using GPT-5.6 Sol, "are among several significant vulnerabilities" it found and expects "similar findings to increase sharply" (OpenAI)

Oh look, the cops leaked the full details of every single crime stoppers tip they got last year, including personal information on the tipster.
Of course it's an external vendor. What could go wrong with outsourcing systems like this?
People are going to die because of this criminal negligence.

I really don't get why Mbin moved to Github. Should have stayed on Codeberg imo, like the project it was forked from.

Fediverse is great and all, but it doesn't have any AI countermeasures.
KDE is firing on all cylinders, Brave says they're the best browser, CERN moves to Debian
And how 'bout no bosses, too? Or landlords, capitalism, billionaires, bigotry, & authoritarianism.
@babe The absent comms were one thing, but I found it "hilarious" how some official institutions just threw up their hands saying they lack clarity and/or the regulation is unenforceable as is... Yet, it's been rolled out anyway and it's rare to see this amount of widespread damage and confusion caused by a single piece of regulation. I can't help wondering what exactly are the people responsible were thinking/aiming for with this all. It just makes zero sense!
@toxi We're all just expected to comply, and for a lot of people just understanding how to is A Task.
I'm pretty good at reading policy and it still took me a few days just to hunt down the information I needed to understand exactly what my responsibilities and options were (alongside the EPR)
