GNOME OS Preview, Epic supports Linux, Linux kernel set to go all in on AI - Linux Weekly News
@kaimac @brook Here's a plan. Leave the damned UI alone other than making the maximum post size settable easily by admins without requiring rebuilding the bloody stack. I'm betting that they still have that ridiculous 500 character restriction in the 5.0 as it stands, 'cause they thin' they know better than everyone else. And fix the ridiculous quoting system that doesn't work worth you know what.
@lauren @kaimac @brook I had a similar reaction when I saw this nonsense. How is post size not a policy question? And shouldn't policy be a tunable?
I'd also throw in the illogical buttons: one opens a reply. One favorites the post. One, smack in the middle of those two...opens a frelling _menu_. Next time you diddle the UI, maybe just make two _separate_ buttons for those actions.

In 2010 I was depressed and miserable and convinced that the whole world was broken.
A good friend of mine and I were texting for 10ish hours a day, about technology, about education, about the problems in the world.
I was bummed because I couldn't afford to go to college. I was bummed because I was convinced that college was, largely, a scam. I thought that there might be a path to fixing it.
But what we found was that everyone serious about education understood that college was a scam, and that education there were serious people with serious plans to fix education in general, and that the problem was governments and corporations.
Usually, when I tell this story, at this point I say "so we opened a record store" which is true! But I have rediscovered going through these old documents that this is an oversimplification.
Second, when I finally watched the ad (I've been mostly ad-free for years), it gave me a deeply unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach. Presumably because generative models were used in the animation. Giving it that living plastic look, which stands out like a chip packet blowing around the forest.
It's visual noise pollution, and just like that chip packet it just doesn't seem like it ought to be there. Why couldn't they have done this with a puppet, early-Weta style?

Finally, I have to address the element in the room. Is Buck - as #HaydenDonnell suggested in theSpinoff - a hot sheep?
"@jestermaxxing posted an image from Kiwibank’s own ad material and sees their DMCA request as a tacit acknowledgement from the bank itself that it, seemingly accidentally, has created a hot sheep."

okay but actually, there's someone that vibe codes all their OC stuff and it's the most dogshit software I've ever seen
they've managed to create an OOP hell in Lua, it's absurdly verbose, you've got constant repetition without reuse, data structures that are nonsense
a script kiddie would do better. and they have the gall to shittalk anyone else's stuff
There's a 1994 book by John Barnes, Mother of Storms, where the Arctic methane traps were released, creating a worldwide permanent hurricane. There's no solution. Also there's simsense & it's heavily used by psychopaths.
John's books range from fun & kinda mean, to incredibly dark & very mean, and this is on the far dark end.
