There are two proposed solutions I have seen. I do not claim that this is exhaustive, just only limited to the proposals that I have stumbled across.
The idea that mastodon has is to have a third-party service that does something like generate a link preview once and then share that to fediverse instances that need it. They have a whole spec they wrote up about these kinds of services that can be run to help out fediverse instances with different things like this, search, or discoverability. They call these FASPs - the repo with the spec is here.
I don’t yet know of any FASP that is live and running, so it is kind of a paper spec at the moment. I don’t do too much on the microblogging side of the fediverse though, so I very well could be wrong.
This comes from an issue on PieFed’s repo. It is basically just an idea at this point, but it is a pretty basic one; have the originating instance fetch the link preview information and simply federate it out alongside the post itself.
There's a copy of the print files for issue 7 of the AR magazine on here.
Likely there are copies of the print files for every issue on here, but Issue 7 is the one that I found when I searched "issue" and/or "pdf" so it's the only one I have right now.
This thing is so fucking weird, even by my standards.
It's supposed to be a music magazine. There are some album reviews and things, but then it ends with a 10 page explainer on Nietzsche, followed by a picture of one of our friends with the caption "probably not the ubermensch"
Then a blank page.
Then one that says "buy stuff from us so we can keep making things"
Then the back cover is a picture of a woman on an electric scooter in classic Victorian clothes captioned "probably the ubermensch"
... what?
I copied some of the video files and now I'm going home.
i guessed right, this is the fucker who claims credit for making Mastodon 5.0 literally unusable
it's for accessibility, you see
you might remember scott from his ardent efforts to get people not to be so *mean* to AI bros on masto, and also to push AI for the KDE desktop, featuring a slide of Omarchy

@davidgerard Boy am I glad I only ever use the web interface for settings I can’t access in a client…

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
I would be so happy if Jira ceased to exist. People keep telling me it's so much better than Bugzilla, but I have no idea what's supposed to make it even vaguely passable.
The front cover:

@davidgerard My number 1 impression on first reload of the interface was "This is AI purple now"
preference:
@brennen toggles are most repairable dangit
@dianshuo these cards do not run anything other than slopware, so you can't, actually, do that with them.
A massive #TulipPoplar, #LiriodendronTulipifera at the #OregonStateCapitol for #ThickTrunkTuesday.
you're telling me this certificate was issued by an authority?
@theruran yes, this is the thing. could everyone please just stop changing things that are basically fine. like, change something that isn't fine. change something that is actively so bad that everyone notices how bad it is every time they use it. no one uses mastodon and thinks "i wish this was harder to see and had different corners"
@theruran design is an evil cult.
@rnd These are great! I think the definitions of the "sending" and "receiving" animations ought to be swapped, though. The large and small circles make for a perspective view of things, where the larger one is actually the same size, just closer. So, the packet leaving it would be "sending" 😄
@GrandTheftUrkel fair
i just assumed a client-to-server interaction, where the server is the larger circle, and didn't even think about perspective
