@cwebber it's kinda funny how our industry has been so dependent on the obfuscation side effect of compilers as a means of source protection.

Thinking about how so many attempts at packaging JS failed because they were easily reversible. Feels like the shoe is on the other foot, in a way.

I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.

I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.

This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.

Hey babe are you an A24 horror movie because I've got some scary trauma to work through

True, we have no conscription; that is, men are not usually forced to enlist in the army, but we have developed a far more exacting and rigid force -- necessity.

@RevKlausMondo apart from the palm-leaf decor, it wasn't too obnoxious. And every bar had Landshark on draft.

And I don't remember hearing any Jimmy Buffet on the speakers. That would've cleared me out.

The data center push proves America can still do massive infrastructure projects, but only if it's to run a long con.

@manu

I think that you're missing my point though...

This isn't a "If we had the technology things could improve" problem. It's a "We don't want to do anything about it 'for some reason'."

It's the "for some reason" that's important here.

@kolev

Or being slashdotted.

@dangillmor "here" is ambiguous, since not every mastodon server is upgraded at the same cadence, and there are also other clients. I use phanpy, which is, I think, mostly just a SPA JS.

Do you know anyone looking for a cute, secluded cabin in the North Georgia mountains?

We're selling ours. It's about 15 minutes north of Ellijay, and about 15 minutes South of Blue Ridge, sitting on the edge of the Rich Mountain Wilderness, a few hundred yards from the Benton MacKaye trail (which feeds into the Appalachian trail.)

It's a beautiful property and a weird little cabin that I really enjoyed living in.

If you think you might be interested, DM for details.
