@aparrish @cwebber I don't think that is technically or commercially viable.
Javascript from a website is "arbitrary user-supplied code".
At worst they can push down the level at which arbitrary user-supplied code is easy to run, so that normies end up stuck running it in a browser or whatever kind of VM rather than on metal.
And that's before we even get into how embedded/microcontroller commercial ecosystems look.
I'm feeling nyaa today. Anyone else?
@PurpleJillybeans Nyaaaa~!
They live quite remote on a mountain ish top so quite beautiful
There is however no running water, no electricity, no internet etc so either solar panels, Starlink and a reservoir
The minimum distance to a store is only about 5KM though
It’s quite something!
@stux so the usual path of an IT worker.. 🤭

Yeah, thats how it should be: one download, everyone else downloads from that server, not the original source.
Seems abusable though
@georgetakei I remember when she used to be on the PBS news shows. I'm kind of surprised that she turns out to be a Christian nationalist. But maybe I shouldn't be. I notice on Wikipedia that she grew up in Alabama.

There's no dedicated telephoto lens. And if zooming in is your thing, that's a huge caveat. You can't tack it on.

@modul_ds Yep, I understand why I made this joke.
Whenever I want something from the local convenience shop, I always walk an extra 7 minutes to a shop further away. Because the man who owns the nearest one always makes small talk at the counter.
There are a lot of false reports being made by the right-wing press, including some made by AI (like the images of a old couple being stripped naked).
No idea if this "hidden synagogue ransack" is part of them (I did not see this information on respectable news).
"A French Jew is complaining that Jewish institutions are being attacked?! It's probably a right wing lie..."
First time in a long while that I've mistaken my shoes for a cat. Made a lot more sense when we had a cat.
Certificate trust bundles contain several hundred trusted certs that all can sign any cert for any name they want.
Your system contains at least four different of these bundles used by different libraries and languages, while other frameworks hardcode their own.
Outside of the browsers, absolutely nobody checks CRLs, OCSP (stapled or not), or CT logs.
Selectively distrusting intermediates (as Go did) doesn't scale and is not practical for most deployments.
So yeah, happy Tuesday.

In Defense of Looting | The Anarchist Library
https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/vicky-osterweil-in-defense-of-looting
Looting is so unpopular not because it is an error or bad for the movement but because it is often a movement’s most radical tactic. Looting attacks some of the core beliefs and structures of cisheteropatriarchal racial capitalist society, and so frightens and disturbs nearly everyone, even some of its participants. After all, we have all been raised and trained to hold, follow, and reproduce those beliefs every day. Looting rejects the legitimacy of ownership rights and property, the moral injunction to work for a living, and the “justice” of law and order. Looting reveals all these for what they are: not natural facts, but social constructs benefiting a few at the expense of the many, upheld by ideology, economy, and state violence.
That looting is one of the most racially loaded, morally abhorred, and depoliticized concepts in modern society should come as no surprise. From its very first usages, the word has served to re-enforce the white supremacist juncture of property and race.

Fediverse
Is there a reason why the publishing instance is not downloading the preview image, and then submits it with the post to the other instances? This way they would not have to fetch it themselves.

TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
