New post: "Do web components have a future if nobody is writing them?" https://nolanlawson.com/2026/10/19/do-web-components-have-a-future-if-nobody-is-writing-them/
Some thoughts on web components and AI coding. This was not an easy post for me to write.
@nolan personally I think both agentic AI *and* web components are a blight on the software industry. I also have a lot of grumpy curmudgeon opinions about React.

Mastodon makes me feel not as weird because the people here tend to relate to what I'm saying, but then I remember that it's just because we're all weird over here.
Officials said they wanted to search the phone of Samuel Tunick, a Stop Cop City activist, for child abuse material. It was actually because he was suspected of “terrorist activities.”
On the plus side, I think I found the original source files for every CD we released at Analog Revolution 1.0
There's also a huge amount of concert footage?
Like, at least 6 hours of shows. Not all of them have audio, but some do.
I could always pull a "blank generation" and just overdub the footage I have with the audio I have.

Fediverse
TIL the fediverse basically DDOS's sites when you share a link.
I shared a link from NPR Tiny Desk but there was no image preview or video embed. After investigating this I learned that when you do that, each instance picks up the link and individually retrieves the link preview nearly simultaneously. For gargantuan sites like YT or Reddit, this is a trivial amount of traffic and not a problem, but for smaller sites like NPR this results in a sort of botnet DDOS attack on the site’s servers. More here. Another example here . For that reason, NPR has blocked Fediverse servers like Mastodon.
I have experienced this on my personal server as well (DDOS), but at the time didn’t know why, exactly.
This isn’t the end of the world, but certainly is not great and hurts engagement with the content. Is there a solution for this? Perhaps using some sort of webtorrent service like PeerTube where they just fetch the information from another fediverse server instead of the source server? Maybe fetching embeds client-side? At least that would stagger the requests.
Meta Muse exposes users' personal and business secrets when they share conversations
A single query is all that's required to find thousands of conversations listed by title.

The new @Mastodon #UI is a bit b0rked.
The "New post" widget that appears a bit like a window down at the bottom is in part behind the bar on the left, and I cannot move it, in Firefox and 1920px width. Had to shrink the browser window down to 1600px or so.
I'll see if I can figure out where to find the corresponding code.
And tbh, it's a bit annoying now to have an extra step for creating a post. I liked the convenient #UX with the inline input.
@Mastodon heh the fix was merged right when I posted 🙃

Pillowfort, a (non-federated) Tumblr-alternative, is closing down
Maybe some of its users will join the Fediverse? But where should they go, I don’t think there’s a federated Tumblr clone.
I'm back at VGH this morning to pickup some paperwork & talk to a couple of staff. Should only take 20-30 minutes. My brother is looking after Mom until I get back. He's starting workday later because we don't have anyone else able to look after her briefly while I'm out.
