Batteriespeicher aus vermeintlichem Elektroschrott
Ein Freiburger Start-up vertreibt stationäre Speicher, die aus alten E-Scootern stammen. Die Kapazität wird zehn Jahre lang garantiert, ohne Verlust.
I’m going to wait to see what the 9th circuit en banc does in the case before unpacking it further.
Here’s a reminder of the stakes for the current election. The Trump regime is trying to scare election workers and officials into not counting ballots the regime doesn’t want counted. This could be outcome-determinative in close races. It may well cause delay and confusion in counting and certifying results. 6/
@SimonCHulse Yeah, I could see that. I'd just have to find it in something durable enough not to scrape apart as a water bottle holder, though. Something very tough.
@moira Indeed. I don’t use this type on my bike as for me they used to drop bottles all the time, I have carbon fibre 1s which are surprisingly cheap and don’t.

@sjaakkeuvelaar@mastodon.nl Of gewoon voor dat loopgedeelte een klein paadje leggen. Kan makkelijk losse tegels zijn.
I am the daughter of someone who designed missiles for a living; my father called himself a "merchant of death" and was eternally conflicted about the things he had helped create. One thing that brought him some solace was when one of the brain-children he helped birth to destroy Soviet bombers became marginally useful for destroying SCUDS, and suddenly his radar and guidance systems were saving lives rather than taking them.
He carried the weight and gravity of what he was doing every day of his life, and was constantly sidelining his expertise into helping radio astronomy as a way to deal with it.
My father is why I have lived a life of securing medical devices, protecting hospitals and peaceful infrastructure, securing homes, and protecting people's retirement funds
What scares the hell out of me is the gleeful irreverence AI industry "leaders" have for the destructive capabilities of their creations; they have no reverence of respect for the pandoras box they are kicking open.
Oppenheimer at least stopped and did the math after Teller said he was worried that the atmosphere would ignite; These assholes are just literally bragging that they might end humanity in a decade.
Trusting these people because there may be profit in it is insanity.

@zeborah thanks for that. Very helpful to have someone with insight. I've been talking to folks at CCPL for over a decade about this, and have been frustrated with their waffly responses the whole time. The beauty of 'libre'/open source is that if you make it better for anyone, you make it better for all, usually at minimal cost/free (it's cheaper as a SaaS provider to keep everyone on the same version). To me that's the real part the NatLib messed up. Proprietary's always dearer eventually.
@zeborah (and by 'you' in 'you make it better', you can be 'anyone' in the world, which is how Koha works, fittingly)
One thing I thought of and explained as contrast to all the vibey stuff going on is the demoscene. Pushing the limits of old computers as art. There's no reason to do it except craft and joy.
But of course, this weekend I saw an article where someone tried to do just that. Even on HN people were saying, why? You're missing the point of the demoscene. There's nothing to "gain" from the demoscene other than community and craft.
If you're using an LLM to try to understand and explain to you how a technique works, I suppose that's one thing. But if you're using it to build a demo, why? Exploring the limits is only there for community joy. There's no other reason to do it.
But every community, the joy and artistry is torn out of it. Intellectual strip mining.
@cwebber
I'd say the purpose of these exercises is in any and all cases to learn what the combination of human brain and [vintage] computer hardware is actually capable of.
Which means doing it by use of an LLM is entirely beside the point of the exercise.
Much like using a forklift for benchpressing in the gym: Remarkable results, but sidestepping the purpose…

Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for alternatives on Reddit; maybe worth pointing to BookWyrm and NeoDB?
Goodreads removed RSS and some people are asking for... #fediverse #goodreads #bookwyrm #neodb #rssfeeds
Both fediverse softwares that support user reviews for books, both have RSS support natively (no Piefed/Misskey bridge needed), and some comments also seem discontent with Amazon's mismanagement overall.

I don’t think the mods there are going to let you.
https://krautreporter.de/internet-und-technologie/6580-so-verwendest-du-ki-ohne-dumm-zu-werden?shared=f9ba2ed1-fdfc-4ac3-b8e5-6aef4c0171ed&utm_campaign=share-url&utm_medium=social-media&utm_source=mastodon.social
@Krautreporter oder KI vermeiden.
Denn die KI-Anbieter haben einen Anreiz, dich in Strukturen zu drängen, in denen du deine Fähigkeiten verlierst und abhängiger wirst.
Du kämpfst dann gegen die inhärenten Strukturen des Werkzeugs.
