@Viss Athens! The one in Greece.
Someone at FEMA still paying attention, apparently, although unclear if any assistance is going to be requested or granted.
FEMA:
"Heavy rainfall has caused considerable flash, urban, arroyo, and river flooding across the Southwest and Four Corners since yesterday, with primary impacts in Colorado and Arizona. The San Juan River peaked at approximately 22-21.9 ft
near 11 p.m. Sunday, nearly 7 ft above last week’s flooding. The crest exceeded the 20 ft threshold at which some homes become inaccessible. While most gauges in moderate or major flood stage are receding, widespread Flood Warnings,
including Particularly Dangerous Situation warnings, remain in effect through this evening. Impacts include evacuation orders, local sheltering operations, communications disruptions, and highway closures; state and local response operations
continue (NWS, as of 6:00 a.m. ET, Nov 2"
@Viss perhaps you would like a trade offer for the screaming dog a couple of rows ahead on this plane?
@Viss (I actually feel bad for it because it's scared and doesn't understand).
This is a genuine question, even though it sounds competitive, but reading is not a competitive sport lol:
Do people typically only read one word at a time? Or…?
I am checking out this Readwise Books app (which seems very cool so far btw), and it tracks WPM and other stats, and there’s a little feed you can explore showing what people on the app are reading like current live sessions, past sessions. And all of these sessions are like 190 WPM, 150 WPM, even in Readwise’s marketing the highest they show is 318.
I’m reading I, Robot in the app currently, and my session showed 541 WPM, and I thought I was reeeally taking my time on this one, re-reading to commit to memory, listening to the words aloud in my head, etc.
This legitimately is just something I’ve never thought about before. Probably like me not thinking about aphantasia being a thing until someone described it? I have no idea how it would even be possible for me to spend more time reading something, and one word at a time is the only possible explanation I can come up with??
@jonah I definitely don't read one word at a time, but I do frequently reread passages to help embed important details in my memory, and flip back and forth to cross-reference things. That could be a contributing factor. 🤷

Hey,
Note sure if you’ve seen, but we’ve been making quite a few improvements to “old.piefed”, you can see a deployed version on https://old.piefed.zip
It’s getting really close to feature parity (I added yesterday emoji reactions, title fetching and usernames and communities autocompletion) with the default Piefed UI, offering another option for people who want to give it a try on their phone. I do it myself, it works.
It’s not the same as a full fledged app, but while I can get around web development, mobile is a completely different beast, and I’m also not sure how happy mobile app devs are with external contributions, especially created using Claude.
Mastodon v5 alpha with Mastodon Bird UI v5 alpha and additional sidebar content in the test/dev environment for our Mastodon fork, mementomori.social.
It's coming together nicely.

@rolle Good Job
@ben do you see a way that I could use my retirement funds to support journalism of this quality?
@dckc Not if you're below the distribution age, unfortunately. You'd end up paying taxes on distributions (unless they're Roth, I guess).
"Widely considered to be one of the greatest American passenger trains of all time, the 20th Century Limited was the flagship train of the New York Central and was advertised as 'The Most Famous Train in the World'. It was described in The New York Times as having been '[...] known to railroad buffs for 65 years as the world's greatest train', and its style was described as 'spectacularly understated'. The phrase 'red-carpet treatment' is derived from passengers' walking to the train on a specially designed crimson carpet."
@jalefkowit as a non-USian who’s kind of fond of steam trains, I challenge the “most famous train in the world” epithet. Using that term in the same breath as “spectacularly understated”, too 😂

To pretty much ANY of the economic crises facing America my careful economic suggestion is this:
- Reparations to Black Americans now
- Landback to Native tribes
If we STARTED there... there's about million dimensions of economic churn and instability right out of the system.
Done right, it'd trigger a crazy amount of economic activity and is the missing capital & resources needed for ordinary circular economics.
Its always hilarious to me when I listen to the IRL circular economics community many you know tend to be academic white led spaces and ummm its always like this BIG MYSTERY where the economic troubles began and where the community spirit has gone???
Meanwhile I'm like... um there's been whole generations of Black economic anything that's just literally burned down anytime stability is found.
Maaaaybe its just the racism keeping us from a more stable economy.

@Paul Would https://www.dafont.com/ work for you? It's what I use for free-for-personal and totally-free-for-everything fonts!
@JenJen Doesn't look like they're formatted for web by default, but it's a good start, thanks!
Pro tip for tomorrow: you don't have to fill out the entire ballot.
If you show up at the polling place and you're like "oh I didn't know this question was on the ballot so I didn't do my research" or you're like "I don't have kids so I don't really feel like I should vote on school stuff."
The races you vote on will be counted, the ones you don't will be ignored.
You could literally ONLY vote for one thing and leave the rest blank if you want.
so angle grinders and leaf blowers before 9am this morning
thats how this week is gonna be huh
