My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.
Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.
Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

LibreOffice is now a project that uses chatbot code then tells people who call them out that slop is "not slop"
so much for the "no AI" babble

@davidgerard STOP PLEASE GOD MAKE IT STOP WHY IS EVERYTHING I LIKE GOING TO SLOP
I am now at about 1000m, and I feel like I can breathe through my skin.
Did a 200m climb on a hike today without a pack and it felt like taking an elevator.
Weirdly, I couldn't get my HR past about 140 no matter how hard I tried. Reverse altitude acclimatization is a thing, I guess?
@grajohnt I once walked something like ten miles across London when I went back without even thinking about it. Enjoy the temporary superpower!

@serge If something like that happened in Israel and Israel acted in kind you would see droves of “The apartheid state committed an act of genocide and we should empathize with the terrorists” takes!

Reddit it’s too big for its own good. I imagine that subreddit must be unmanageable, like any minimally popular subreddit.
I’m really fucking tired of people shitting on anything that isn’t doomerism.
I’ve self-censored on everything positive in this network for far too long and I’m tired of it

Reddit's r/opensource bans AI slop, and quite a few humans for good measure
Meanwhile on reddit.
Honestly kind of sounds like lemmy.world mods like Jordan Lund tho…
To get a project featured on the subreddit, developers now need to show it has been actively maintained for at least a year, has an established community, and has at least three contributors, give or take. Student projects such as note-taking apps and PDF viewers aren’t welcome either, and developers can no longer use the subreddit to find people willing to help maintain their software.
That creates a chicken-and-egg problem for independent developers, who apparently need an established community before they can use an open source forum to find one. Even projects with no AI involvement could fall foul of the rules. One Reddit user pointed out that their nine-year-old project, which has more than 300 GitHub stars and dozens of resolved issues, would no longer qualify because they’re its sole contributor.
The moderator also imposed a minimum Reddit account age of one year and requires significant prior contributions. Anyone who attempts to post and then contacts the moderators seeking an exception risks being permanently banned and muted.
Pondering my visual functional "Alonzo" programming language...
1. I realized that I neglected to include anywhere to document types. I should include a field for that!
Now should that be a localized string or an expression? I suppose if I want to expose this documentation as tooltips it should be short-ish strings...
2. Its tempting to have drawing lines between different slots in a pattern denote equality, but once I include callbacks not everything can be compared...

trying this "tiny computer" app on my duo, and it's such a fun idea.
yet i've also never felt more attacked. this whole app is nerd bait. this was created by someone who has never used any of these computers once but has a claude subscription.
type 'paint' to launch a drawing GUI on my c64. c’mon.

OpenAI claims its models have made 3 major discoveries in mathematics, computer science & physics.
One reportedly disproves the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a foundational assumption in computer science for 25 years.
Two researchers who originally proposed it are now helping verify the AI’s proof.
If this result survives independent scrutiny, AI will have done something more consequential than outperforming humans on a benchmark.
It will have overturned a foundational scientific assumption held by experts for decades.

I did not know the Mastodon/ActivityPub account migration process was so busted.
Somehow, there were over 800 followers that didn’t get moved from my old account to this one until the *third* time setting up the redirect. A lot of them are on mastodon.social. I don’t get another try because there’s a 30-day cooldown and the old instance shuts down in a few days.
This is a bad user experience! No wonder a lot of people just give up on the platform.
