How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
When the New York Times has three prominent articles everyday about how Chuck Schumer is the inevitable next Majority Leader, the one thing you know for sure is that Chuck Schumer is NOT the inevitable next Majority Leader.
@mastodonmigration they are trying to do a sith mind trick on us.
After all these stories about supermarket fridges being hacked, I decided to defrost and deep clean my fridge at home. I found no hacking devices or open connections :)
@jwildeboer "That's what she said!"
I think in general it is worth knowing when parts of your identity or your hobbies are going to bump elbows with fascists.
Bumping elbows doesn't mean that they are (necessarily) in your communities, but it does mean that your community might be a target for recruitment, or that they will hang out in the same spaces.
For example.
If you are in asexual spaces you _will_ bump elbows with incels. They will try to invade your spaces, or think they belong in your spaces, or think they will find sympathy in your spaces, or try to recruit in your spaces.
If you are in autistic spaces you _will_ bump elbows with nazis.
This doesn't mean that any of the members of your space _are_ that, it just means that without good moderation that is who will tend to eventually show up, and whose talking points will infiltrate your space. Sometimes covertly.
A key to prevent this is good moderation, but that's not sufficient. You also need to know the language of these groups and be mindful when it shows up in your spaces.
@hrefna I’ve often gotten the advice to not spend some time in “problematic spaces” (say, lesswrong, twitter, or incel spaces, …) because they would influence my thinking (I guess there is something to that, but I trust my absolute stubbornness 😂).
But when there is so much concerted effort to subvert spaces, it’s really useful to see the concentrated lingo and thought patterns of certain toxic movements to be able to clock them in less obvious places. I think doubly so as one ages out of being terminally online / out of touch with the current discourse, as we’re prone to think of ourselves as the savvy online 20 year old we might have been (saying this because of mastodon trending older millenial).

They’re not private at all, I’ve never been under the illusion that they were.
I like it, have some guts, stand on business. If people want to downvote they should be willing to attach their name to it, internet points are fake anyway.

From Gus Bova: There are a few ways to summarize Tuesday’s results. For example, as in the headline above: “Holy shit.” Or: “This is impossible.” Or: “I think I’m accidentally on some kind of drug you typically have to forage deep into a remote jungle to find.” https://www.texasobserver.org/holy-shit-texas-democrats-are-gonna-govern/
@TexasObserver So happy for y'all! 🥰
Hey Fediverse. What are some good places to look at if I want to live and work in Seattle in the tech industry (IT operations mostly)... But don't want to work for the big ones like Amazon, Microsoft, etc? We are getting ready to move, and I have a remote position, but I miss office life and want to be able settle in here.

🍂 Stray Kitten Report 9 (1/2)
Charlotte, the little female, is now less terrified of being indoors. At first, she wouldn't put a single paw inside. Getting her in has taken long sessions of nudging her with food and play. By the end of the week, she was grooming herself on a chair and even slept for a little while. Well, 1h max. We still can't pet her, but it's a lot of progress for this little wild one.

I've talked before about how I mentor a robotics team at a small local school. When I say "small," I mean the graduating class last year was 9 students.
One of those who graduated was the main engineer on the team, a good kid. When I first met him about 4 years ago, he was a typical rural boy. I think the first interaction I had with him was to talk to him about using the R-word.
I also remember his wide eyed confusion when he first saw my husband, who looks like a scary tattooed biker and not the stereotypical gay man. "Wait, *that's* your husband?!"
Robotics has an extremely inclusive and diverse culture, and I literally watched this kid "wake up" in real time.
This past year, he became a leader on the team. He helped me stand up for our trans student against a phobic teacher (and got all his jock buddies to give the teacher a hard time all throughout the year).
I remember on the last day of our robotics competition, he slept in and arrived late, and we had to get a photo done right away for the newspaper. So he rushed to the trans boy and asked him to help fix his hair quick in the bathroom.
He once sat quietly with one of our autistic students for an hour after a meeting ended because they were having a meltdown, then drove them home. He takes care of his disabled mother, and spent his 18th birthday taking her around town and partying with her. Just an all around great guy.
And so when he saw that this old bigoted asshole was running for school board, he put his name in. His very first time voting in an election and his own name was on the ballot.
And fam, he won!
This 18 year old kid is now on the board of the school he just graduated, ousting the local Big Name family that has held a majority for the last 15 years. I'm so fucking proud!
Working with teenagers is difficult, and sometimes I ask myself why the heck I'm doing this for free. But it's times like these where I can see the impact I'm making just by being visibly out, and encouraging kids to be compassionate to each other.
