@ai6yr I took the Schwinn a good percentage of the way down, but not as far as this one.
Basically _everything_ needs help here, so it's the obvious thing to do rly
@moira Oooh, lots of work!!!

@robryk @MHowell @ai6yr @cpsc_bot @W6KME @_thegeoff @stepheneb @pmonks In climbing there are two basic kinds of ropes: static and dynamic. We use static (low-stretch) in mountain rescue because it's wasted energy to put a stretchy rope into a mechanical advantage system, and because we want precision. But note that we also use static ropes to belay the rescuer – which is safe to do because the slack is very carefully monitored so they'll never fall more than a foot or two. Ditto toproping (where your anchor always is above you): safe on a static rope so long as there's little slack.
BUT! On a static rope, a foot or two is all the leeway you get. Remember the example I have before of a daisy chain whipper on Dyneema (static)? That's when you have a good anchor point, clip yourself in on a 3' safety line, then climb up a little to place the next anchor, and slip, for a total fall of 6'. If the safety line doesn't stretch, that fall absolutely will break you: rupture a disc, maybe even invite a kidney. It's BAD.
In more serious climbing, people "lead climb": climb the rock, place an school and clip your rope through (not to) that anchor's carabiner, then climb above that last point of protection until you install another anchor. You're always climbing above your last pro. In that situation, you need a dynamic rope so if you fall it will stretch. Also, you are much safer the longer the rope is, because a 50 ft rope will stretch much further than a 2 ft rope. So you can be 100 ft up, with your buddy belaying you from below, and be 30 ft above your last protection on a dynamic rope, slip and fall 60 ft, and you'll be fine, because that's a lot of stretch. You don't need a separate shock absorber.
So, yeah, a 60 ft fall and you're fine, but a 6 ft fall and you're peeing blood.

Fediverse
Does any of you know any fediverse federation maps?
Are there any maps showing which instances federate which others? Like those maps with nodes and connections
It’s for no particular reason, I’m just curious >.<
@ai6yr ooph. They don't look built to deal with the volume of water.
Just looking at the "before" pics the street drainage system doesn't seem up to even hard rain... interval, size of drains, likely indicating the infra not up to challenge. :/
Floods this volume must be a more recent development than the stuff built.

What new in CoMaps in October
Want to learn what the CoMaps community worked on during October? Learn about it in our latest “This Month in CoMaps” blog post here: comaps.app/…/this-month-in-comaps-october-2026/
The caption is doing a lot of work. "feels like he is going to die" is basically my 3pm.
@willhbr yeah! Not sure if we will go on one today, but they're still fun to watch.
How did libraries do at the polls last night? (Spoiler alert: Big wins in the stacks!) #books
@aurynn maybe? But designing PC-grade hardware is _hard_
There's a reason only a couple of indies exist
@astraluma One theorises getting, like, cooler Vega or RX 5x00-series chips? they'd be a big step up from what's there already...
@LeslieBurns @ai6yr when you live in this storm-flogged peninsula you learn to accept them as facts of life (hence things I drive) but here the infrastructure for high volume drainage is in place, and building codes are up there, of necessity. You learn to discern "bad place to get caught in storm/flash flood" on sight, and even the "before" aerial pics of that place made me twitch.
Video Clip: Senator-Elect Abdul El-Sayed does not back Chuck Scumer for leadership
"I want new leadership - focused on getting money out of politics, putting money in your pocket, and passing Medicare for all... I want to see who else is willing to throw their hat in the ring."
Oh my word, Seymour now talking Modular Nuclear Reactors. He's such an oligarch captured shitstain. He has no 'mandate' - he has shareholders.
@lightweight Is he subdividing his home-property to make space for one?

You know, surely someone has, in this interesting future time we find ourselves, spent some time and effort designing PCIe upgrade cards with more modern chipsets for Trash Can Macs Pro
