Danke Felix. Wir sind jedenfalls sehr froh, dass du dir die Zeit für uns genommen hast - und finden den Podcast auch richtig gut geworden.

For every innocent protestor that can afford good legal advice, how many are silently being criminalised in the UK?

https://activitypub.space/ run a NodeBB, maybe you can ask to test against that?

Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!

@intrepidhero as you said, telemetry would be "better than nothing" – I believe it would at least alert us to instances where the software is being used against our current assumptions, which could help us to narrow/prioritize research questions. But Mastodon's software collects as little user data as possible, which makes it nearly impossible to draw conclusive and statistically-significant insights.

@intrepidhero I realize these problems aren't unique to Mastodon, but are common challenges for designers of open-source software. How do we responsibly iterate on under-resourced projects without burning out? What are some low-telemetry ways we can find meaningful signal? I'd like to continue that conversation with others who are interested.

Yes. They could just not set them at all in the published source, and just set them in their deployment. They are at least dishonest about the reasons for keeping the source closed, which is sad.

Hello from RetroLemmy!
I'm kinda surprised by how many people love https://columnly.social
I built it for myself, and you guys turned it into something way better with your feature requests.
I love building UIs, and I can't wait to ship the new Pixelfed redesign.
It's ready but I'm waiting until Mastodon officially ships v5.
Why? Because 😉
@dansup your app makes v5 actually tolerable

If you're in a part of the world that celebrates Bonfire Night, please remember to re-site and check your firewood before lighting it. Hedgehogs and other small animals often hide inside wood piles, so moving the pile at the last minute as well as checking it ensures they aren't in it when it's set on fire.

Nothing stops those being adjustable tunables.

Good question, however the security model doesn't depend on the code being secret, and it shouldn't. The auth, signatures, permissions and input handling are standard and went through an OWASP review before launch.
What's closed is the anti-abuse layer, spam, rate-limit tuning, the signals for detecting ban evasion and coordinated accounts. Those work partly because spammers don't know the exact numbers. Lemmy's and Mastodon's are public and they get played for exactly that reason. Hope it helps :)
NEW: Security researchers found residential proxies running on the White House network, exposing other devices in the president's inner circle to cyberattacks.
The security company that detected the activity said "anyone buying proxy access could use it to reach internal systems."

if the core is closed for the stated reason, does that mean you are unsure about the safety of the system?

It's a shame you see it this way, Andy Piper disagrees but you're free to think as you wish, it's an open forum :)
Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
