thinking a lot about the concept of "chair stacking" today, and its power in organizing online communities https://www.jonafato.com/2024/12/20/stacking-chairs
The teachers used to watch us very closely in the showers after PE to make sure we were getting clean enough. I asked my teenage son the other week if this had ever happened in the schools he's been to and he was absolutely horrified
@fesshole Gen-X right? Dear me.

@meljoann call me stupid, but which timezone are we talking here?
@dec_hl oh that’s a good point! Sorry I forgot the poster was for hanging in the UK 🤣
UTC / GMT.
It occurred to me then that *most* people seem to think that animals only have value - and deserve protection - if they're 'owned'. Indigenous, ambient wildlife has - in most people's minds ~zero (or even negative) value. The crucial, unique value of our biodiversity has *not* been well explained to the mainstream. What do you think? @joncounts
2/2
@lightweight yes absolutely.
There’s a similar dynamic I think with the plant portion of the ecosystem although it that case it’s less about ownership and more aesthetic/tourism benefits to humans. The awe inspiring forests need protecting of course but here in Victoria, Australia some of our most significant biological diversity exists in grassland ecosystems you’d probably assume was a boring paddock if you drove right past them

The smarter you are, the harder it is to admit fault. Intelligence doesn't weaken the ego; it arms it.
Savings go. Friendships go. Companies go. All to avoid saying, "I was wrong."
I made a video about it, including the tripwires I use to catch myself.

@Daojoan Hello, interesting video, however the very “dynamic” subtitles with words that are highlighted as they are spoken (instead of just the sentence printed on screen) make it very hard to follow and to focus on, and tiring to watch.
It is much more accessible to have normal, less flashy, subtitles, which allow you to read more easily without being distracted by words changing colors at a quick pace.

Closed source and clearly completely vibe coded? Just look at the site, it reeks of AI. Even this post has so much AI-speech.
Yea, no thanks.
It's a shame you see it this way, Andy Piper disagrees but you're free to think as you wish, it's an open forum :)

Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!
