Every elected Democratic official needs to live their lives like they only have two years in power. US politics is extremely unpredictable. No one knows where the long-term trends are going.
You have two years. Do shit. Go, go, go.

TURNABOUT
Another Thorne Smith novel. This one significantly more risque.
Comic fantasy. An ancient Egyptian god swaps the bodies of a bickering married couple, Tim and Sally Willows. The resulting chaos includes social disasters, workplace mix-ups, and (while Tim is in Sally’s body) a pregnancy.
Later adapted into a 1940 film and a short-lived 1979 TV series.
Published: Original hardcover 1931 (Doubleday). This Pocket Books edition is 1947.
In better condition, I'd ask $15, but this copy has a cracked spine and pages that will (but have not yet) come detached.
$5 + shipping
(if you like the Thorne Smith stuff, I think I have ten of his books in Pocket Book editions from 1945 - 1950. I can dig them out specifically if you're interested.)

THE STRAY LAMB
One of the oldest books in this collection, and one of a small collection of non-science fiction novels.
This is by Thorne Smith, perhaps most famous for writing Topper. Smith wrote funny fantasy stories, which were occasionally risque or ribald, even very infrequently venturing into mildly lewd. This one is pretty tame.
Mild-mannered commuter Mr. Lamb starts turning into various animals (horse, seagull, etc.) after meeting a strange little man, which thoroughly disrupts his dull suburban life and marriage.
Published: Original hardcover 1929 (Cosmopolitan). This Pocket Books edition is 1948 (518).

There is a lovely, loud protest outside the Harry Potter experience in Oxford Street today.
Remember the names of the Texas billionaires behind the GOP's bigotry.
These oligarchs thought that a cynical hate campaign would turn out evangelical voters.
Start with these billionaires...

Everything that makes the US more small-d democratic makes it less Republican. The coalition of malignant billionaires and racist, misogynist midwits only wins via structural advantages -- malapportionment, gerrymandering, money in politics, the filibuster, etc. Let's start knocking those down.

From Sal on matrix:
From what I can find, the managing director of the company that runs serverspace.io (ITGLOBAL.COM NL), which is the company that rents me the VPS space, was arrested by Dutch authorities. The infrastructure in Amsterdam was disconnected without warning when this happened. Since my latest database backup is unfortunately not very recent, and because there is still hope that the severs will come back up, I am waiting and hoping that I regain access to the data. They originally published some somewhat optimistic message, but as of today their website is inaccessible.

I could not find any statements from Dutch police or really any source other than IT Global themselves. But, this event may be related to “Dmitry Gachko” (owner of ITGlobalcom Rus) being added to this sanctions list: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dec/2024/1484/2026-07-13
I recieved no warning, and I did not know about the ownership structure of serverspace and did not consider that the infrastructure was exposed to this risk. I figured “VPS in Amsterdam from a Dutch company” was rather safe. But “Dutch company operating in NL” does not mean the same as Dutch owned…
That’s a shame, I liked some communities on there. Another example of the importance of the 3-2-1 rule.
Please, celebrate the wins last night. But I'm begging you to not erase that a lot of things went very badly for trans folks. A lot of things went well for us, too, but what went badly is *chilling*.
I am personally worried about things going the way of the UK's Labour wins, and everything from pundits hand-wringing about "Democratic overreach" to Jeffries talking about bipartisanship is reinforcing that worry.
Please hold space for both.
@mastodonmigration Lead with issues, don't let the media spin it like it's petty or personal. Don't let anybody paint you as "unserious" . @QasimRashid

Considering the move to Lemmy or hosting with a custom architecture
So far, I like what’s been built here. There are a few things I’d change, but they’re not dealbreakers. My main concern is the voting system and how it works. Otherwise, Lemmy seems like a solid option. I’m not sure how much voting can be disabled or changed on an instance.
I’m considering either hosting a Lemmy instance for nightash.net, where I currently run a traditional forum, or building something closer to the architecture I described here .
I’d appreciate feedback, especially from people who might be interested in using it.
