"Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted"
— Attributed to Winston Churchill, evidently not something he actually said, but feeling appropriate at the moment.

@mastodonmigration @Lana MSNow did over an hour on that theme... One even saying that Trump loves to reach over the aisle and not one of the hosts pushed back ... They kinda of joined in
we think we're going to switch to xterm as our terminal. we've been using konsole on nixos, and we've liked it as far as its compatibility and themeability, but it takes a long time to rebuild because it depends on a ton of qt stuff. we think that might even include qtwebengine (for the help box ><), but we're not totally sure about that part.
@ireneista have you tried urxvt? For many years it was my preferred terminal.

Accessibility isn't just physical stuff like being able to get up the stairs.
Accessibility is also affording to get to the stairs in the first place.
Being disabled isn't just a physical barrier, it's a monetary parasite that lives on you and sucks out all your cash while suppressing your ability to work for said cash.
wait, you guys actually fucking pulled it off?!
@nerdnextdoor I'm in a dazed, happy stupor 🤤

@tante AI as Fast Fashion for code... 🤔
That seems to be a really good analogy!
@heiglandreas I have gone into that parallel a bit more here https://tante.cc/2026/01/15/software-as-fast-fashion/

that's because in the economy of household chores, often men don't
clean the toilets/ bathrooms (which is not acceptable, obviously)
Good software development is mostly engineering: Requirements- and metric driven with some aesthetics sprinkled in.
Writing code - which is something different - is way more about the artisanship and self-expression.
Code is closer to art that software usually is.
With that hell of a preface in place, consider a thought experiment. There's a piece of open source software you use on the daily, offered by its developers and maintainers completely free of monetary cost.
It is, notably, somewhat aggressive about auto-updating. Perhaps it has a nontrivial security surface, such that this is justified, but it's part of the thought experiment regardless.
Suppose one day it gets a new splash screen, including a very prominent swastika.
How should you respond?

I'm gonna try something a bit heavy here, and I'll ask that you read with a bit of nuance (with the caveat that nuance is not inherently good or bad, some things should be nuanced, other things shouldn't be). I don't ask good faith, as I don't think that's a reasonable policy, but I do ask that you read the following few posts *carefully* especially if you disagree.
