Yet another “we’re jacking our prices because we added slop capabilities and now OpenAI/Anthropic are turning the screws” email just landed.
Guess I’m looking for an alternative service. Again.

Xxxxx has given me a laptop used by David Gerard and the below damaged has been reported on closer inspection.
12/05/2010: User reported hard disk failure. S/N: xxxxxxxx & Asset xxxx
Left side of casing cracked by at the fan.
Power inlet is damaged.
Casing to the left in front of keyboard and the front left corner by the microphone is cracked. Toshiba logo has been removed to the right of the touch pad.
Top of the screen casing is cracked.
Screw missing from right hinge.
Docking port is pushed into the motherboard.
Casing under fan is depressed and cracked.
“Open Rights Group” label has been stuck on top of the laptop.
Hard disk has failed. Hard disk was only replaced in November 2009.
The laptop was purchased last year and I’m not sure how the damaged was sustained but it is a worst case in comparison to Xxxxx Xxxxx. A hard drive failure was reported initially, but from inspection the overall condition of the laptop is poor for a model of this age.

it was the complaint about the open rights group sticker on the end as a “NOT ONLY THAT BUT” that got me giggling
i blame toshibas for being shit, cos they are

This post matches my experience in Computer Science classes. LLMs are being used to generate low quality lessons, assignments, and presentations. We're being forced to use LLMs and other times forbidden.
That combined with the highly competitive environment of many CS classes makes it nearly unbearable.
The mods at Lobsters removed a link to this for its topic being "not using LLMs" which feels ironically appropriate considering the state of the field.

this is like an example you would give to a small child to explain why monopolies are bad

@gavi Both. It nearly always needs to be both. Whatever the choice. :)
Ugh a student(?) used #include <print> in their code and now I have to go upgrade my g++ version to be able to build it. >_>
@Moosader never heard of such a thing
That's because the libre customer is the user is the developer. 100% aligned. For Big Tech, the developer works for the customer - the shareholder. The user is an afterthought. With monopolies, the alignment gets worse - existing users become the enemy when something 'new' is released. They need to be made to 'upgrade' even if they don't want to. 0% alignment.
The coup de grace against any non-capitalist procurement by NZ gov't was our membership of the CPTPPA.

I wrote about that yesterday: https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@lightweight/117551373432104733
Note that what I say about 'Big Tech' incentives apply to all proprietary software, because, once purchased, the vendor has effective monopoly for that software over the purchaser. The power balance is the same.
The EU has finally, in 2020, produced this report: https://euipo.europa.eu/tunnel-web/secure/webdav/guest/document_library/observatory/documents/reports/2020_Open_Source_software/2020_OSS_Full_EN.pdf in which they belatedly recognise the value of libre software to the EU. Let's see if they manage to push back the Big Tech/Four lobbyists now. 🤞🏻

Gonna do more of these, they take about one evening each to do. Will eventually stick them on the Faircamp page. Requests?

Labour retrospectively kicking away the ladder from people who have come to this country in good faith to contribute and to bring massive benefits to all of us is cruel, cowardly, and un British.
it’s thoughtful to schedule Election Day during Discount Chocolate Week
@molly0xfff um, where? Asking for a friend
When it comes to vertical tabs in browsers, is the use case that it is full screen so you have the horizontal room for them?
@chartier Yes, you can also resize the sidebar to make as much of the tab titles visible as you want. Mo tabs, mo titles, mo better. This was one of my favorite features of OmniWeb back in the day.
Sorry, the app encountered an unexpected error
