Voter: “Oscar”
PW: “Does Oscar want to register and vote today?”
Voter: “No. He’s a convicted felon.”

@bnuuy I think that’s actually not the point.
Because the expert has opinions, and opinions are annoying when they may be to not do something you really want them to do, which they might not want to do, because they have family, too.
For a billionaire, paying 10x as much doesn’t hurt, as long as that means that they won’t hear a "no".
And everyone who runs these products helps to train them – showing them how the requests should have been fulfilled.

@ArneBab @resuna @fogti @ketanjoshi85 oh, i'm sure the control aspect is a major motivation. i'm just frustrated at how little actual willingess to step back for a moment and think about things all the people at the very top of the bubble are displaying.
like, it doesn't make a lick of business sense to bet everything on an unproven technology with zero plan to make the *trillions* of investment back. it also doesn't really make that much sense from a control perspective; with this much money, you could easily just pay everyone around you to be a bunch of spineless yes-folk who always agree with you. it only makes sense if you are this extremely superficial and arrogant person who never actually thinks through *anything*.

... there was panic. Understandably. After all, many of us had only been warning them for a few decades. But when the EU scrambled to find an alternative to US Big Tech... the *only* viable options they found were locally developed libre/open source systems. The EuroStack is essentially a collection of them stitched together. It looks very serviceable. Perhaps better than the incumbents' products. That's because unlike for corps, *the incentives* for libre software are *100% user-aligned*.

That's because the libre customer is the user is the developer. 100% aligned. For Big Tech, the developer works for the customer - the shareholder. The user is an afterthought. With monopolies, the alignment gets worse - existing users become the enemy when something 'new' is released. They need to be made to 'upgrade' even if they don't want to. 0% alignment.
The coup de grace against any non-capitalist procurement by NZ gov't was our membership of the CPTPPA.

Beeswax lip balm? Bees are going to want to sit on your lips.
Beeswax candles in a cabinet outside? Bees will think that's a good place to set up a hive! (have seen this firsthand, lol... had to remove a giant hive of bees that moved in because of the beeswax candles).
