@sarahjamielewis the people are still there, and most feel the same loss that you do. It's our job to rebuild that community on a more solid foundation.
Donald Trump posted an AI-generated cartoon in the style of Family Guy where Dana White is the press secretary and UFC fighters beat up journalists for asking questions they don’t like.
There’s even a scene where a UFC fighter yells “Michelle Obama is a man.”
The president of the United States.
The press doesn't need to attend a Dana White presser (if one happens).
They can choose not to platform unserious people and liars.

@mcc Is this just an elaborate plot to make us all look up and learn the meaning of “liminal”.
Also that pill made my life more liminal.

Early today I read someone discuss working at Microsoft and how the slow deteriation of the support staff - the janitors, HR staff, assistants, etc. - signified the deteriation of the company as a whole.
In my time working in the cinemas throughout the USA in the 90s and 00s, I identified another type of tell for a company heading towards its own demise. It was the simple trash bag.
I worked for some rather well established and prestigious cinemas. The well run ones all had the good thick 3mm trash bags. Only one was needed for containing the night's refuse. Then when the bean counters or a district manager was looking to make a name by cutting corners the bags would become thin and cheap.
The good managers would double and tripple bag their garbage. Others who didn't know better, or didn't care, or who were limited on their quotas of bags remained with just the one thin bag per trash can.
The one bag would rip. They always ripped. The ushers dragging the trash out inevitably pulled a snail trail of spilled cola behind them on the way to the dumpster. The carpets took a beating.
From that single ply garbage bag the demise of the cinema was written. I'd watch as well maintained cinemas became poorly policed and cleaned in the name of cost savings. Cinema chains would bleed off theaters in their control. A buyout would happen and more cinemas would close.
I'd watch it time and time again. The crappy trash bag was but a bell weather for things to come.
I guess there's a *possibility* that 206 Burger itself existed back in 2014 and they just moved in when 8 Ounce went under for good, but I don't see anything on their website that supports that possibility.
Okay actually the domain name was first registered in 2014 so I guess that probably is what happened. But I have no idea where they were located before they took over the 8 Ounce space.
Also FWIW the 206 Burger menu is nothing like the 8 Ounce menu. 8 Ounce made *amazing* high-end burgers that cost $20 and were worth every penny.
Film review: Godzilla (1998): dreadful.
@neil If it helps, Godzilla Minus One is great.

“AI is the single most powerful technology ever made!”
And yet, I still have to see one (1) thing that has been unambiguously made better by “AI” in my life.
@georgetakei hmmm, I don’t know. He’s still ugly any way you look at him.
Translations? Worse. Looking at pictures? Worse. Reading the news and staying informed? Worse. Carbon emissions? Worse. Looking for new books or video games? Worse. Customer service? Worse. Moderating content on Mastodon? Worse. My favourite fucking card game? Worse.
There is not a single fucking aspect of my life that has not been made worse by “AI” in the past three years while I’m still looking for a *single* thing it improved.

Speaking of art, I really enjoyed photographer Taryn Simon's solo show Father Country I Do Love You at the Guggenheim NY. It's a bit controversial (the NYT art critic panned it), but I thought it was terrific, weaving together themes of memory, loss, and PTSD in the context the major events of the last half century.
Hint: start at the bottom and work your way up the spiral (some Guggenheim exhibits go the other way).
