i feel like lemmy has broken the promise of the fediverse
cross-posted from: feddit.org/post/37748055
… where every platform communicates with every other platform. i’ve rarely ever seen a post from mastodon on here, and even if it’s technically possible, it doesn’t seem that it happens very often.
likewise, i’ve rarely if ever seen a post from lemmy on mastodon. these two platforms just don’t seem to interact much.
the fediverse is already very small. fragmenting it even further by having multiple services that basically don’t talk to each other is not good. we need to either (a) aggressively find a way to bridge certain lemmy communities to be more visible on mastodon, especially location-based communities, or (b) i think that i’ll have to decide to only use mastodon in the future, because that’s where all my irl-friends are (yes i have those too, i do not only exist in a terminally online state 😊 and because mastodon is bigger already and that’s why i think that it has a bigger chance of taking off.
so, what do i suggest should happen?
especially for location-based communities (australia, london, darmstadt, …) it should be more probable for people living in these locations to draw use out of the lemmy community. maybe it’s just a question of showing lemmy content from these communities on mastodon home pages, or auto-subscribing mastodon users to nearby lemmy communities. something like that.
My thoughts:
On Mastodon people follow users, and on Lemmy people follow topics so I spend more time on Lemmy, but do see some of the same posts on both. I think the cocktails would do well on there but would have no idea how to accomplish a cross posting situation, nor would I feel comfortable posting other people’s posts without asking each time. And I don’t really want people following me.
There's an event today in San Francisco to celebrate #AaronSwartz on what would have been his 40th birthday.

I was asked to give some remarks. But I couldn't make it to the physical event and there won't be a virtual version. So I wrote out my remarks for one of the organizers to read aloud for me.
I was told to talk about Aaron, mention at least one concrete thing people could do to advance #OpenAccess, *and* stay within 30-60 seconds. But I went a long, with the organizers' permission. I appreciate their flexibility.
🧵
Im not buying this, but you can.

Import your Google Maps reviews to Mangrove
Did you review places via Google Maps in the past? @mangroveReviews@mas.to now offers a way to import your past reviews, which means they will also appear in CoMaps in future maps!
Change is always hard. It seems many people are disappointed with the new Mastodon version.
Once admins upgrade to v5, there's no going back to v4. I hope users won't be hateful towards admins for upgrading the software. If the change is too much for you, we have options in fedi: apps, alternative interfaces like elk, alternative instances running forks like glitch-soc or my instance mementomori.social, and even something other than Mastodon that suits you better and lets you connect with Mastodon users (Akkoma, Friendica, GoToSocial, and so on).
We can thankfully modify and use the fedi as we see fit, unlike in big tech platforms where we just need to accept the change. That's the beauty of it. Please don't give shit to people who are trying to do their best. There's a lot of good in this. Together, we can make the fediverse even better.

can we shout out to the fediverse developers, for making the fediverse possible
shout out to the lemmy developers for not making us be stuck on the other site
shout out to mastodon devs for making us have a better life than on Twitter
shout out to the pixelfed devs for allowing a actual photography platform to exist
shout out to the peertube devs for helping us not be stuck on youtube until the end of time
ETA: Shout out to the server operators who make the stuff be done

How private do you consider your votes in the Threadiverse?
From the technical side anyone can spin up their own Lemmy instance and view all votes, but I'm curious at what the community's perspective on how "private" that is. I think Mbin already shows upvoters? Piefed allows anonymous voting. I also know there are sites which show all voting history, but assuming those are fairly disliked.
My general questions to the community: - Do you expect your votes to be private, or just not shown in the UI? - Would per-voter votes showing up on another aggregator platform bother you, even though your instance already shares them with other servers?
For context I'm the dev doing some two way bridge interop between atproto + Threadiverse, in atproto the votes/likes are generally publicly accessible, you just look at the users repo through something like pdsls.dev, they're readable and archivable by anyone. In my opinion this isn't that big of a problem since it's fairly hard to look at and discern (Ex all my votes: https://pdsls.dev/at://did:plc:lmdkqemqrqnfiix72pyjhfey/social.coves.feed.vote). Ultimately trying to figure out if there's already a mutual understanding that they are public and we can just mirror them or whether they should stay hidden as an aggregate.
Better question? Do votes ultimately matter? Some instances show who voted, some don’t, some don’t even count downvotes. So in the end, who cares?
like regardless of what you feel about LLMs, it is very easy to just do/say anything other than "contributions resulting from slavery are good, actually"
@ariadne just.... fucking wow. 🤯🤦♀️💀🪦
Today's Low Quality Ad is for the Furby Galaxy Edition. Back when I was a kid, we didn't have these crazy intergalactic Furbies. We had the original that would whisper in your ear at night that it will kill you in your sleep, and your parents refused to believe you.

Welcome @pepmass
@pepmass welcome to metalhead.club! I'm happy to see you here after our conversation yesterday in Erding! 😀
I'm attempting to do this with my broken jaw…

Hi, yes. One of your sources, Hampton Think, is a leftist “proletariat” (self-described; on Hampton Think’s about page). They are an open platform with no fact checking, so:
- Not only are you citing a leftist source, which, saying this by itself, is an ad hominem
- And they have no fact-checking or peer review
- You are using it to justify anti-capitalist and pro-socialist ideologies. This is circular logic; using anti-capitalist cherry-picked proof to reinforce your anti-capitalist ideology. Addendum: What do you think about “In defense of Communism”, your second source? Yeah. Give me some real sources next time.
Addendum:

My bad for using the r-word for offended folks; it was in the heat of the moment

Pet peeve that gets stronger every year:
Why, in the name of everything that is holy, can organizers not write the venue name / town / country on their event flyers or ads?!?
It's e l e m e n t a r y if you want people to show up.
Hiding basic info behind a click or a QR code or whatever isn't enough. Do not waste your potential audience's time.
GAH!
@davidrevoy @m_berberich David, you're doing the right and kind thing. M, the Warriors book series is fiction; cats do not consciously care about bloodline.
Even in this conservative study, fixed cats live about 2 years longer than intact cats - and that's for pets, not ferals (for ferals, the difference is even greater): https://peerj.com/articles/18869/
The other side of this moral question is what uncontrolled cat reproduction has on the environment: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/364243694_The_effects_of_free-roaming_cats_on_native_wildlife_populations
Cats are a human-created species, and we are responsible for keeping them safe and healthy and as harmless to wildlife as is possible. Romanticizing their endless breeding is not a useful perspective.
