Systemic oppression and structural violence can create conditions that enable relational abuses that cause personal trauma. Patriarchy and capitalism complement each other in creating the conditions that enable religious abuse/coercion, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual violence, gender-based violence, and many more.
Any oppressive system co-opts any moral framework available to justify its oppression. Oppression is oppression. Abuse is abuse.
I've never considered, not even once, using the conditions surrounding a person as a reason to deny their agency and dignity; whether someone is an abuser or a victim and whatever our personal relationship with either of them is, the one thing that I think we should base our perspective on is that everyone was born with dignity, has free will, has agency, has choices.
Those choices may be produced by their conditions, but they're choices that they can make nonetheless. Denying someone's agency means denying them the dignity to assert their free will; it dehumanises them.
Harm is about impact, not intention.
The moment you deny women's agency, whatever your reasoning is, you're dead to me; I won't mince my words with anyone who regurgitates imperial and patriarchal apologia wrapped in feminist, religious, or any progressive language. This includes those who extend an abundance of benefit of the doubt to abusers, males, people in the West/Global North, white people, or any government. I won't explain myself.
But I will tell you something: the people who did the most damage to me throughout the first three decades of my life were all Muslim women. I can understand why they did what they did, but I'd rather die than excuse what they did to me just because they were 1) Muslims, 2) women, who were also harmed by the conditions we were in. I'd rather die than consider that any male who was born in the past two centuries is worth listening to in politics, economics, art, the humanities, sports, Islam, STEM, anything really. And most importantly, I'd rather fkn die than let people in the fkn Global North, especially if they're white non-Muslim, talk over Muslim women, hijabi or non-hijabi, with their perspective on oppression, liberation, freedom, patriarchy, misogyny, and Islamic practice.
Don't worry, you're always allowed to voice your perspective; it's your right after all. I just want to make sure you know you are a pathetic, constipated clown and scum of the earth, in case nobody has told you lately.
