“Soon after arriving in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, on the afternoon of Nov. 6, Pope Leo XIV issued a clarion call for universal health care not only in this small Latin American republic but also ‘in every society.’”
Incredible.
@lowqualityfacts I'm not sure that this applies to my own brain...

***somebody clearly got the idea that they could release these people, arrest them again as soon as they stepped outside, and then tell the judge "we released them!" and neglect to say "for 2 seconds". I don't think in the normal courts and in a normal legal system, that would be acceptable. (ie flouting the meaning behind an order). But, I am not an attorney. Apparently they don't have any legally qualified people making these decisions, either. (not that they care it seems)
@ai6yr In Russia, there's an increasingly common practice referred to as "carousel arrests" - On paper, police can't detain you indefinitely, but they can repeatedly arrest you for misdemeanors like "petty hooliganism" and hold you for a week or two, as many times as they want
(this is, uh, not a model I think we should be adopting here)

Yes. I enjoy watching planes, but I can't imagine donning a swimsuit to viiew landings at SXM on St. Maarten.
It seems like sanding off a layer of skin.

@ramsey unfortunately, Colorado voted against it in 2024. 😞

I need a very very thin case for the iPad mini. It doesn't need to prop up, it's going to be in my hand. Just a front cover, preferably stiff but THIN, with whatever is needed to hold it on the back. I don't want a sleeve or bag system or organizer with a slot for the mini.
If all else fails, I'll rig something up with thin wood & cloth, but that's effort & I'm lazy.
@thefathippy I seriously didn't know if this was in response to Truck Island or the photo of my boobs.
@Alice @thefathippy If there were two hands in play, I think the answer would be clear.

Do not listen to the "get rid of C" crowd, unless they pay you money.
For your free time and fun pick literally anything.
@RuthODay2 I've heard that homicide is the most reliable statistic for violent crime: it's almost always reported, and it's simple to quantify. When I look at the numbers for Ontario, I can argue it's going up or down, depending on what year I compare it with: https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3510006801&pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.7&cubeTimeFrame.startYear=1961&cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2025&referencePeriods=19610101%2C20250101
That's a vague answer I know; I don't have a feel for Toronto crime rates. Car thefts were in the news a few years ago, so maybe those are up.
I am not seeing an increase. Though it is cyclical, for sure.
But it hasn't been at a rate higher than 2 per 100k since 1990. Last year's 1.27 is tied for 10th best in the set of data
Hardly the stuff of alarmist headlines.
