Happy 4 years to everyone that arrived in the Great Wave of '22 and are actually still here. You're the real heroes.
🐦⬛ Mastodon Bird UI 5.0.0-beta.1-2026-11-08 (nightly) is out. This is Bird UI rebuilt for Mastodon 5, the new 5.0 design that is now in beta.
The nightly follows Mastodon 5.0.0-beta.1. If you are on Mastodon 4, stay on 4.7.3-2026-10-11 from the main branch.
New:
- Rewritten from scratch for the Mastodon 5 design
- Micro-interactions, likes and boosts are whimsical
- Notifications, content warnings, link cards and thread lines look like they did on Mastodon 4
- Follows Mastodon's own light, dark and high contrast settings
- A darker, blurred backdrop behind the composer and every popup
- A new install script for Mastodon 5, or paste dist/mastodon-bird-ui.css into Custom CSS
- The star favorite, light and language variants are no longer supported
You can see it live at https://mementomori.social.

For a while, I was under the impression that all spiciness, or burning sensation in food flavoring, would come from capsaicin, the compound that causes it in chili peppers. Then I realized that Sichuan peppers are a quite different kind of heat. Wasabi (horseradish) is different yet again.
How many hot-flavored compounds are there? At least five!

merephone mini-news: I corrected some of novice mistakes & bought a pack of resisters. Now hopefully I can get my buttons to work?
@nullagent Anyone who says the Schumer was the mastermind needs to reconcile how he ignored the south. This was a win in spite of Schumer and the DSCC, not because of them.
@mastodonmigration @nullagent and their emails did not inspire one to contribute.
@tomahawk83 Lucky you, here the price of my vet in Montauban are a bit more expensive:
- Male: 50€
- Female: 110€ (or 140€ in the case she is pregnant).
The vet proposed me 10% because I have two male and two female, if I plan them on the agenda on end November/December. I also plan to get them have chip for identification, and vaccine them, that can add up to 80€ per cats.
@davidrevoy Sorry! This price (37$) was in last year, and now nearly 52$ (Female). I want to sterilize my cat at the end of December, too. In Russia, chips for identification are mainly implanted in dogs.
Yes, sterilizing four cats at once is quite expensive.
NYT: Schumer is a shoe in
Senators: not so fast
NYT coronation is premature. With 9 out of 56 senators voting nay on Schumer, this is by no means a done deal

@jwildeboer wonderful.
@mcc are Penguin biscuits covered in real chocolate these days?
@MikeStok I am sorry. I am also in Canada, and therefore cannot answer this question.

@clacke @temptoetiam BTW sichuan peppers are not peppers, but from the same family as citrus 😁
