@garland @mattblaze @lawyersgunsnmoney I’m not -saying- it wasn’t happenstance but I mailed it in September, it arrived in LAX customs Sept 30, and was held there until exactly the day after the election.

Why is customs holding a regular piece of paper mail anyway? I mean, at all? *especially* if it's marked as a ballot.

Government must move away from toxic social media platforms | Open Rights Group [Video]
We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

@simulo yes, the thesis I'm writing right now. gimme a few weeks :)
@simulo or you can go straight to the source and read the authors that introduced the concept, but tbh it's all quite dense and not at all a practical tutorial: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pst.175
this is why i'm writing this thesis, to make the concept more accessible to researchers who aren't total statistics nerds
Just a random geometric loop 🙂
A new day. A new chance to succeed.
Lots of moving parts this morning, each needing a little bit of attention, none needing a lot.
A day of potential just waiting for me to kick it into gear.
The temptation to dive in headfirst runs strong but I think I'm going to take a few minutes to just sip my coffee and enjoy the quiet before the storm to come.
The day will unfold as it will. I'm not going to fight it.
May all your moving parts move the way you need them to #today
Good morning! The predicted heavy rain was slow in showing up, but has arrived, complete with thunder. Today will be a washout, so I'm happy I have no where I need to go.
I'm going to be spending a quiet day curled up with a book and snuggling with cats, listening to the rain. The boundaries of our driveway have already disappeared, covered with fallen leaves and I suspect the trees will be mostly bare by tomorrow. All the better to spot birds. 🐦 🦉
Lol, this is an amazing story. A Canadian firm says it's going to use AI to extract more fossil fuels which can then be used to power AI

Hello and a good meowing everyone!
Have a most wonderful day and stay safe 😸♥️
@stux It is a happy day here in Texas!
Thanks for the meowing greetings!
We preliminarily found that TikTok’s ‘For You’ feed has a harmful design.
It shows users a continuous stream of personalised videos, even when those are related to mental health struggles and body image.
While TikTok has implemented measures to mitigate this risk, we consider them insufficiently effective.
The design should rely more on users’ explicit preferences, increase the accessibility and usability of user controls, and regularly test its algorithm.

Following on from my old “how long have you been using computers” polls from a long time ago, here’s one I’ve wanted to ask for a while.
How did you first get online?
Not the first time you used a computer but rather first time you were actually connected to something outside your own machine. A BBS counts. AOL counts. The school library counts. Your mate’s dad’s work account that you definitely weren’t supposed to be using counts as well.
If AOL or CompuServe was just how you got on the web, pick dial-up. If it was at school, uni or work, pick that one.
For me it was Optus ADSL on the family 😜 machine. I don’t remember any modem screech so I’m firmly in the broadband kid camp, but the internet still dropped every time someone had to use the home phone because the phone had to be plugged into the same wall socket as the modem router.
Last time round the results skewed heavily towards people who started in the 80s which makes sense on a retro instance, so I’m curious how this one splits. I’m expecting a lot of BBS and CompuServe answers.
Tell me the details in the replies!
