Hi from normals.me. If you can read this, the federation works
This post is written on https://normals.me and delivered to !fediverse@lemmy.world over #ActivityPub, so if you are reading it the basic plumbing works. Now let me explain what is this.
Normals is a forum with communities, threads, and questions with an accepted answer. It is a single instance, not software you can host, and the core is closed for anti-abuse reasons. The federation module will be published separately with implementation notes (FEP-67ff).
What federates today Every community is a Group actor following the Lemmy model (FEP-1b12). Follow @selfhosted@normals.me or any other community from Lemmy, PieFed, Mbin or Mastodon.
Posts and comments go both ways. Replies from your instance appear in the thread on Normals, replies from Normals go back to the origin.
Remote content is labelled with its origin, links back to it, and is never copied. Media loads from the source.
Signed fetches, so it works with instances that require authorized fetch. NodeInfo 2.1 is up.
Policies, in case they matter to you, it has no ads, and no paid reach, and of course no AI training on posts. AI crawlers blocked by default, public mod log with reasons, and no automated removals. Numbers at https://normals.me/transparency so please take a look.
If something from your instance shows up wrong here, or something from here shows up wrong on yours, reply with the URL and I'll fix it. Andy Piper mentioned NodeBB uses the same group model, if anyone runs a NodeBB instance I'd like to test against it, if possible.
I hope we all have fun. Cheers!

Government must move away from toxic social media platforms | Open Rights Group [Video]
We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.
Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.
Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

How would you explain the mandelbrot set to a sixth grade student who is trying to distract you from teaching your substitute lesson on solving linear equations?
(I swear to god these kids pass around lists of which topics distract which teachers most easily. They know the ants won't work, it's too obvious. But this was a good one.)
Said student also has some peers convinced that the mandelbrot set will "eat you" and I haven't done much to clear up this rumor.
@futurebird Too bad Jonathan Coulton's "Mandelbrot Set" has an f-bomb in it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tsutU92rrE

Protesters break into Microsoft data center site in Amsterdam - Europe is witnessing a wave of protests against data centers.
Reuters reports that around 100 people made it into the construction site, with some scaling a crane to place a “fuck AI” banner. Protesters also unfurled a “Microsoft powers genocide” banner on the construction site, and chanted “Microsoft has got to go” and “free Palestine.”
virt-manager, when you try to create a VM, asks if you would rather use a "Local ISO image" or a "Existing disk image". I'm certain if I read the entire manual I'd understand how an "ISO image" and a "disk image" are totally different but wow. Linux… Linux never changes
@mcc the sad part is: I’ve been using virt-manager for years and it still confuses me at times. So it will not get better, only your tolerance for it might increase.

the human, which is a type of animal, is the only animal which claims to be 'trying to get in touch with its animal side', despite being an animal and thus having no non-animal side
@ColinTheMathmo AIUI the SPF record (which is a DNS TXT record) lists the hosts that are allowed to send email, so you might need to add the machine-running-your-CLI to it?
Maybe the host sending things from webmail is listed in there but not the CLI machine?
@amcewen The script connects to the regular email host and sends from there:
server = smtplib.SMTP(server_host_name,587)
So the emails should not advertise themselves as coming from my local machine where the script is running.

The website becomes a source, a dataset, not a destination anymore. The issue with that: we are building, again, a walled garden. And websites will become a nerd medium again. Sound quite sad to me.
And on kind of the same topic, but more positive The Boring Internet by Terry Godier. For him, it’s not dying, but a commercial veneer glued on top of it is. Open internet of email, RSS, personal websites, and independent.
