We shouldn’t be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them.

Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information.

Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the UK Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

How would you explain the mandelbrot set to a sixth grade student who is trying to distract you from teaching your substitute lesson on solving linear equations?

(I swear to god these kids pass around lists of which topics distract which teachers most easily. They know the ants won't work, it's too obvious. But this was a good one.)

Said student also has some peers convinced that the mandelbrot set will "eat you" and I haven't done much to clear up this rumor.

@davidrevoy "I will fix it" --> made 6 fingers a standard 1 month later. Mega LOL ^o^

I have an elderly neighbour whose name is either Maureen or Margaret, I can never remember. I call her Maurgreet and she hasn't noticed yet. We've been neighbours for 10 years.

Nearly every Hacker News thread about GrapheneOS has a dozen accounts posting blatant fabrications about it. There's a mix of fresh accounts and long term serial harassers who have engaged in years of personal attacks. We've talked to the HN mods and it's clear they support it.

@davidrevoy @jmlich 😄 Thank you!
I have to say though that with Omarchy taking off, I was dreading the day some mobile variant, "official" or not, would come along. If I want to keep https://linmob.net/resources a somewhat complete list of things, I likely should list it, with a big asterisk or behind a warning... As they claim to support devices that are "not the usual few", there may be some benefit to readers in listing it after all. I really don't know what to do here: No longer even attempt to give people the full picture, or list something deplorable ... no matter how I decide, there's some controversy and needless conflict right around the corner, as if the LLM schism would not be bad enough... Decisions like this make me want to stop. For now, I'll not list it, because not changing anything is always the lazy thing to do, but I will have to come to some kind of a decision at some point in time.

@StarkRG

"it looks like nobody knows how to pronounce helicorprion"

There are literally dozens and dozens of ants whose scientific names I have no idea if I'm saying correctly since, unless I can find the person who named them or some linguistic chain of custody it's kind of impossible to know.

I think the way it works is that those of us who talk about the ants the most win.

This is why ants are called "pogos" and "discos" and more ... most myrmecologists being fundamentally silly people.
