I think this coder may have been trying to do manual memory management in python
they do, like:
def get_url(url):
response = request.get(url)
document = json.loads(response)
response=None # <-- this line
return document
like, that almost makes sense in C, right? they're freeing the HTTP response. but this is python, we have a reference-counting garbage collector
@foone I've had to do similar things in managed runtimes to band-aid other inefficient operations that I did not have time to redo.

Finally, there's tooling for #androiddev to test backup and restore of apps: https://developer.android.com/studio/preview/backup-restore-testing
This is an area which was neglected by Google and app devs alike. Hope this will help to improve the backup situation on Android.
Of course android doesn't have a proper backup system at all.
All of the apps are backed up together and you can't restore a single app.
Only one copy of the app data is saved. It's impossible to restore to a previous working state after it is overwritten state.

If your “anti-abuse” security requires your software to be closed source, then your software is not secure. Well built software can be open source, and still secure.
You imply that your code could not prevent abuse if it was known, so, no offense, but that code must be pretty bad!
I like the fediverse because it distributes power. I, as a user, have the power to choose my instance, choose my moderation, choose the structure that my social interactions are built upon (threads based, microblogs, etc) and if I dont like something, I have the power to change it. Thats why open source is such a perfect fit to that model. Closed source federation then, sounds to me like you didnt get it.
