In 1910s Alaska, there was electioneering, partisan antics, racism, non-secret ballots, and a fraudulent governor. Plus an epidemic & "big, fat" sex workers. This was politics as pioneers played the game. Learn more in a free article at the Alaska Beacon: https://alaskabeacon.com/2026/11/03/alaska-election-shenanigans-date-back-to-territorial-days/
I’m fed up with all of these radical leftists and their extreme policy positions, like “Healthcare” and “People with more money than they could ever spend should pay a little bit of taxes sometimes” and “Maybe the planet could be a little less on fire.”
Try and make the world a little bit of a better place. Pick up some trash outside, hold a door for someone. A little bit goes a long way. You can make a difference!
@hamishtpb Dunno if it counts as whimsy, but I've got this thread of cute baby birds https://mastodon.social/@Cheeseness/117549794187556799
I’ve seen what happens when a country forgets its principles, and I’ve seen what happens when people stand up for them. Today, standing up looks like casting your ballot. Join me in voting and making your voice heard, for yourself, your community, and your loved ones. It may feel small, but together our ballots add up to real change. 🗳️
@georgetakei “Battlestations, this is not a drill.” “Star Trek: The Original Series” (Season 1, Episode 6 – “Mudd’s Women”) Sulu’s sense of duty and urgency is evident as he issues a call to action during a crisis.
Found the most mastodon place ever. The Australian Centre for Rare Arts & Forgotten Trades offers short courses in silversmithing, armour making, leatherwork, bronze sand casting, limestone carving, stained glass, corset making and more

Taking a step back helped me understand where my limits are.
I'm giving up #HolosSocial and #Fedihood. They were both ambitious projects, and I can't carry them alone.
@apps do you see Fedihood living on as a project owned by the community? It was pretty cool and I didn't see anything quite like it. I've seen discussion that Mastodon should just adapt some of the features, but I did like that it provides a place talk about local events and news without feeling like I was annoying my global followers.
It's a weird design choice.
@lowqualityfacts And yet, no one steals them!
Oh you're lesbian? Name ALL women.
#Vote! Like the perv you are. 🗳️
Naked voting might increase voter turnout.

The great actor #PatrickStewart died yesterday, aged 86. He was best known for his role in something called #StarTrek, which was apparently a celebrity walking show. Like Strictly, but with cagoules & stout boots.
My favourite Stewart performance was this 2016 short made for #TheGuardian: "What has the ECHR ever done for us?"
It's about the #EuropeanConventionOnHumanRights #ECHR

In 2008 I wrote a networking utility program for Linux. It's still maintained and used. Take the first letter of every sentence in its (rather long) man page and it spells "Never gonna give you up" etc etc. Nobody has ever mentioned it.
Beautifully crafted virtual Rickroll, including the 2008 date mention, the year of the Rickrolling mania.
Inadvertently put the hat on at a jaunty angle
@pikesley unauthorised jauntiness detected
I'm going to try something new.

The Man From Uncle - The Doomsday Affair - $6 + shipping
Up first is the second book in the Man From Uncle series, The Doomsday affair.
British Souvenir Press / Four Square Books edition (catalog 1466), first issued in October 1965. It's approximately 180 pages long, standard pocket book size.
It's got standard wear around the edges consistent with age. The binding is still string and the cover, in spite of the wear, feels sturdy.
There is a pen mark on the front cover. I did not notice any stickers or other residue.
@ArneBab @resuna @fogti @ketanjoshi85 LLMs kind of have a way of making people less... idk, self-aware? but i suspect large part is also that the hype bubble itself made certain attitudes and differences in priorities a lot more visible, since generative AI is promising to make actually acting on those attitudes and priorities a lot more practically feasable. turns out, quite a few people with money and power are, well, (capital-K) Kyles, who now feel empowered to be "competetive, but not out loud".
(just to be clear, i do think they are misjudging how much genAI is going to enable them; it does enable them, kinda, for the moment, but the more successful they are in pushing genAI on everyone, and the better genAI gets at (at least superficially) doing taskes, the less some mediocre, petty, jelousy-driven asshole is going to stand out in a crowd of genAI-users.
it's the fungus fallacy: they would like the social benefits of having created a thing (using genAI), but then also have their creation be pretty-please judged by the pre-'genAI devaluing the concept of putting effort into something' standards so they can get praise for it.
this is yet another way they show how little they understand the technology they are peddling or the social consequences of the same; a very Kyle approach to the world.)
