If you want to avoid FOSS which uses GenAI/LLMs, there's a guide called "AI-free FOSS Alternatives" at:

It's heavy on technical terms and detail, so it's good for comparing different projects and navigating least-worst options, but does require some prior tech knowledge to understand.

It also has a section listing reasons why LLMs are problematic:

I went back to Kubota Garden yesterday to photograph the twisted Japanese maple, this time from underneath, looking straight up into the canopy.

The bark was still wet from the rain, dark and smooth against the orange leaves. When I showed my wife this one, she said it looked like a sculpture.

I think she is right. It looks less grown than carved.

Do you see a sculpture in it, or something else?

I keep finding new shapes every time I look at it.

Ketchup haters bore me. Oh wow, "ketchup is for children"? What a bold stance

Ketchup is fantastic, I cannot get enough of that shit

I hope all the parents remembered to double-check their kids' #Halloween candy. There are some sick, sick people out there.

Crop rocket?

Vote because they can't.

Your annual reminder to all the American data science nerds in your life

that 4% jump in day-over-day metrics you're looking at is called "fall back"; there were 25 hours since the previous 7:30am

Let's see if #getfedihired works:

I'm a SW engineer, I'm very proficient with C++ (25yrs, I'm one of the coauthors of the static reflection feature), Python 20y, Bash 20y, I have quite a lot devops and some webdev experience. I have done team/tech leading and I have also taught at a university for 12 years (OS/Shell, SQL DBs, meta-programming, Linux kernel programming, etc.)

I'm looking for a new IT job, with the above in mind, preferably remote (in GMT+1)

Boosts appreciated

@monneyboi @pixmo Sorry, what? Who is connecting language models to fascism?

This is a *widespread* view with many, many adherents who have written extensively about the phenomenon. I hope I'm mistaken about the apparent claim you've never heard of such a thing until now…because if not, I highly encourage you to start your education now.

This is the only human-authored commit message in the entire repo.

Alonzo non-news: I attempted to implement an algorithm for typechecking generics. I was unsuccessful, back to the drawing board!

These'll be vital for offering a decently flexible standard library. Without it collection types would be far too rigid for serious reuse!

I mean, is there any more succinct way to illustrate "tech-bro" contempt for the concerns of everyone else?

People are not stupid.

Let them launch their genius marketing plan, and may a thousand memes bloom to ruthlessly humiliate them just on Day One.

Apparently now in Siri in macOS 27 (which has replaced Spotlight as the thing you get on ⌘Space), when you type a mathematical expression, you get an incorrect result in large text at the top, and then the correct result in smaller text underneath. Awesome.

#Steam #TerrinothHoD
